The Office Takes Over Fortnite: A Comedy Legend Joins the Metaverse
There’s been some chatter amongst the Fortnite community – a lot of “who actually wants this?” – regarding the arrival of characters from The Office. To those skeptics, I say: get off my lawn! The Office wasn’t just a TV show; it was a cultural phenomenon. Running for an impressive 10 seasons and boasting 201 episodes, this comedy ended in 2013 but is now finding a new life within the Fortnite metaverse.
Michael & Dwight: Iconic Skins & Show-Referencing Styles
The skins and cosmetics for this collaboration have been unveiled, and they’re fantastic. Both Michael Scott and Dwight Schrute are making their way into the game, complete with edit styles that pay homage to classic moments from the show. If you’re a fan, you’ll immediately recognize the references. I, for one, am logging in the moment these launch in the store – and that’s tonight!
- Michael Scott: Expect to see styles referencing his “World’s Best Boss” mug and questionable fashion choices.
- Dwight Schrute: Beet-farming attire and his signature mustard-colored shirt are a given!
Beyond Michael & Dwight: What Does This Mean for Future Collabs?
Currently, Michael and Dwight appear to be the only two skins included in this collaboration. While the absence of Jim and Pam is noticeable, it’s understandable. If only two characters were going to be featured, Michael and Dwight were the obvious choices.
However, this collaboration is significant for another reason. It opens the door to a whole new realm of possibilities for Fortnite crossovers. We’re no longer limited to superheroes and action stars. What’s next? 30 Rock? Parks and Recreation? Please, Epic Games, consider Arrested Development! Imagine Gob and Tobias skins, a chicken dance emote, and a Blue Man edit style – the potential is endless!
Reaching a New Generation
The show originally premiered in 2005, meaning a significant portion of the current Fortnite player base wasn’t even born when it aired. Despite this, Fortnite has a history of successfully introducing characters from the past, like Ripley from Alien and Marty McFly from Back to the Future. These are iconic cinematic figures, but Michael and Dwight are comedic TV legends in their own right.
This collaboration proves that Fortnite isn’t afraid to tap into nostalgia and introduce a wider range of cultural references to its audience. It will be interesting to see how this collab performs, but I have a feeling it will be a hit.
I’m already bracing myself for the possibility of a The Big Bang Theory collaboration… please, no.
