Heading Out This Weekend? Here is Your Essential Guide to the Tour de l’Île Road Closures in Montreal
If you are planning to drive through the streets of Montreal this weekend, it is time to double-check your route. The city is gearing up for a celebration of cycling with the Go vélo Montréal Festival and the highly anticipated Tour de l’Île cycling event. While these events bring energy and health to our streets, they also bring significant traffic disruptions.
To ensure you don’t get stuck in an unexpected detour, we have compiled a comprehensive guide to the road closures and construction projects affecting the metropolitan area.
Tour de l’Île: When and Where?
The main Tour de l’Île event will take place this Sunday from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. During this window, dozens of streets across multiple boroughs will be closed to motorized vehicles to ensure the safety of the cyclists.
Major Closures by Borough
Depending on where you are heading, your commute may be impacted. Here is the breakdown of the most affected areas:
- Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension: Saint-Laurent Boulevard will be closed between Bernard and Legendre Streets. Expect closures on Jarry Street West (up to De l’Épée Avenue) and Park Avenue (between Parc metro and Thérèse-Lavoie Avenue). Access to Frédéric-Back Park will also be restricted.
- Ahuntsic-Cartierville: Saint-Hubert Street will be closed from Legendre Street to Gouin Boulevard. Note that eastbound lanes on Gouin Boulevard will be exclusively reserved for cyclists.
- Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie: Watch out for closures on Beaubien Street between 21st Avenue and Des Érables Avenue.
- Plateau-Mont-Royal: While main commercial arteries remain open, residential streets like Henri-Julien and Drolet will face disruptions.
- Ville-Marie & Downtown: Expect closures in the Quartier des spectacles, specifically affecting Saint-Denis, Sainte-Catherine, Saint-Laurent Boulevard, and Saint-Antoine Street near Victoria Square.
- Sud-Ouest: Cyclists will be taking over Wellington, Saint-Patrick, and Notre-Dame Streets, impacting the Lachine Canal sector and the Saint-Rémi tunnel area.
- Westmount, CDN-NDG & Outremont: Portions of Sherbrooke Street, Saint-Catherine Street, Earnscliffe, McLynn, and Barclay Avenues will be inaccessible.
Beyond the City: Laval and Highway Alerts
The disruptions aren’t limited to the downtown core. If you are traveling outside the island, keep these alerts in mind:
- Laval: The Laval Firefighters’ Run on Sunday will cause closures between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m., specifically affecting ramps near Highways 15 and 19.
- Honoré-Mercier Bridge: Only one lane in each direction will be open from Friday at 10 p.m. until Monday at 5 a.m.
- Highway 13 & 520: Major work at the interchange near Côte-de-Liesse will lead to lane reductions and full shutdowns of portions of Highway 520 eastbound through Sunday night.
- Vaudreuil-Dorion: expect closures on Boulevard de la Cité-des-Jeunes and the Highway 20/30 interchange.
Pro Tips for a Stress-Free Weekend
Avoiding the affected areas is the best way to save time. However, if you must travel, we highly recommend using real-time tools to monitor traffic flow.
The most reliable source for up-to-the-minute updates is Québec 511, the official provincial traffic monitoring service. Whether you are using a car or public transit, checking the current status of the roads can prevent unnecessary delays.
Stay safe, be patient with fellow drivers, and if you can, why not join the spirit of the event by hopping on a bike yourself?
