MLB Top 100 Prospects: A New Golden Age of Shortstops?

Is a Golden Era of Shortstops Dawning in MLB?

The future of Major League Baseball looks incredibly bright, and a significant portion of that excitement centers around the shortstop position. MLB Pipeline’s recently released Top 100 Prospects list reveals a remarkable depth of talent at shortstop, potentially signaling a new golden age for the position. Leading the charge is Konnor Griffin (Pirates), boasting the best overall tools in the Minors and reigning as MLB Pipeline’s Hitting Prospect of the Year. He’s not alone, however. Kevin McGonigle (Tigers) is considered the purest hitting prospect in the game, closely followed by JJ Wetherholt (Cardinals).

The Top 10 Prospects for 2026

  1. Konnor Griffin, SS/OF, Pirates
  2. Kevin McGonigle, SS, Tigers
  3. Jesús Made, SS/2B, Brewers
  4. Leo De Vries, SS, Athletics
  5. JJ Wetherholt, INF, Cardinals
  6. Nolan McLean, RHP, Mets
  7. Sebastian Walcott, SS/3B, Rangers
  8. Samuel Basallo, C/1B, Orioles
  9. Colt Emerson, SS, Mariners
  10. Max Clark, OF, Tigers

Griffin isn’t just a top prospect; he became the first Pirate ever to reach the No. 1 ranking in MLB Pipeline’s history last August. His impressive .333/.415/.527 debut, including 21 home runs and 65 stolen bases, propelled him to Double-A at just 19 years old. The Tigers also showcase impressive depth, with McGonigle and Clark joining the ranks of highly-rated prospects.

Record-Breaking Shortstop Representation

Remarkably, a record-breaking 28 shortstops cracked the Top 100 list this year. Position players dominate the rankings, occupying 68 of the 100 spots, while the remaining 32 are pitchers – the most since 39 pitchers made the pre-2021 Top 100. This surge in position player talent is a testament to the evolving landscape of baseball development.

Biggest Risers and Fallers

The 2026 list features 36 players who weren’t on last year’s preseason list. Nolan McLean (Mets) experienced the most significant jump, soaring from unranked to No. 6 after a stellar year that included a 2.06 ERA in eight big league starts. Other notable newcomers include Carson Benge (Mets), Payton Tolle (Red Sox), and Luis Peña (Brewers).

However, not all prospects maintained their position. Ethan Salas (Padres) experienced the biggest fall, dropping off the list entirely due to a stress fracture. Other highly-touted players who saw their rankings decline include Quinn Mathews (Cardinals) and Jeferson Quero (Brewers).

Farm System Strength: Mariners Lead the Way

The Mariners boast the strongest farm system, with seven Top 100 prospects, including Colt Emerson (No. 9). They also lead in Prospect Points with a total of 365. The Pirates (318) and Tigers (317) closely follow, demonstrating their commitment to developing future stars. You can find more information about farm system rankings at MLB Pipeline.

Demographic Breakdown

The Top 100 prospects represent a diverse range of backgrounds. Seventy-three were drafted, with 43 being first-round picks. The remaining 23 came through the international market. The United States is the most represented country (73 prospects), followed by the Dominican Republic (11) and Venezuela (5).
