Out-of-Control Lobstick Wildfire Threatens Saskatchewan Communities
Residents in the region surrounding Shellbrook and Prince Albert are on high alert as the devastating Lobstick wildfire continues to spread. What began as a localized blaze has escalated into a massive environmental crisis, with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) reporting that the fire remains out of control.
Initially sparked by a lightning strike on Tuesday afternoon, the fire has shown an alarming rate of growth. In a matter of hours, the blaze jumped from 1,300 hectares to a staggering 13,000 hectares, leaving firefighting crews struggling to contain the perimeter.
Evacuations and Community Alerts
The rapid expansion of the flames has put several small communities at risk. The tension has been palpable for residents in the following areas:

The Battle Against Extreme Conditions
Firefighting efforts are being severely hampered by a “perfect storm” of weather conditions. Much of southern and mid-Saskatchewan is currently under an Environment Canada heat warning, with temperatures soaring into the mid-30s and humidity levels plummeting.
Jordyne Seminoff, a dedicated volunteer firefighter from Macdowall, emphasized the danger: “With that heat and the humidity being so low, we’re kind of in that best recipe for a fire to move.”
Controversy and Safety Measures
Not all has been smooth in the operation. Local residents, including long-time resident Cory Wasyliw, questioned why certain equipment appeared to be pulled back while the fire was doubling in size.
Responding to these concerns, Public Safety Minister Michael Weger clarified that safety is the priority. According to Weger, the extreme heat and terrain made it impossible for dozers to access certain hotspots, forcing crews to temporarily reorganize their strategy to avoid risking lives.
Current Status of the Operation
The SPSA has deployed a comprehensive fleet to combat the Lobstick blaze, including:
