Yunior Marte Steps Up: Cincinnati Reds Shuffle Bullpen Amid Injury Crisis
The Cincinnati Reds are currently navigating a challenging stretch, not just on the scoreboard, but in the training room. Just as the team’s bullpen seemed to find its rhythm, another significant blow has landed. In a strategic move to maintain their late-inning stability, the club has officially called up right-hander Yunior Marte from Triple-A Louisville.
The Setback: Graham Ashcraft Hits the 60-Day IL
The vacancy created for Yunior Marte comes after the devastating news regarding high-leverage reliever Graham Ashcraft. Ashcraft has been placed on the 60-day injured list due to a right ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) sprain affecting his elbow and forearm.
For Ashcraft, the injury was a sudden shock. After a dominant scoreless ninth inning against the Mets, he woke up the next morning to unexpected stiffness. To avoid the dreaded Tommy John surgery—which could sideline a player for over a year—Ashcraft is opting for a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection. While he awaits a second opinion, the goal is a recovery timeline of roughly two and a half months rather than a full season of rehabilitation.
Who is Yunior Marte and Why Now?
With the bullpen stretched thin, the Reds need reliable arms who can handle pressure. Yunior Marte arrives from Triple-A Louisville with the expectation of filling the gap left by Ashcraft. His arrival is critical because the Reds’ relief corps has struggled significantly this season, plummeting from a top-tier ERA in April to ranking 27th in the Major Leagues with a 4.92 ERA.
The team is also battling a league-high 135 walks, making Marte’s ability to throw strikes and provide stability in the later innings more vital than ever.
A Bullpen Under Pressure
The injury to Ashcraft isn’t an isolated incident. Manager Terry Francona is essentially managing a “hospital ward” in his pitching staff. The Reds are currently missing several key players, including:
- n
- Emilio Pagán: Out 4-8 weeks with a left hamstring strain.
- Hunter Greene: Currently on the IL.
- Rhett Lowder: Currently on the IL.
- Brandon Williamson: Currently on the IL.
Because of these absences, Francona has pivoted away from a traditional “dedicated closer” role. Instead, the Reds are employing a matchup-based strategy, relying on a rotating cast of arms including Tony Santillan, Brock Burke, Sam Moll, Tejay Antone, and Pierce Johnson.
Looking Ahead: Can the Reds Recover?
Despite the hurdles, the spirit in the clubhouse remains resilient. As Francona noted, the team isn’t looking for sympathy; they are looking to compete. The integration of Yunior Marte is a key piece of this puzzle, providing a fresh arm to a unit that desperately needs to lower its ERA and control the strike zone.
