WTAP Weather Update: Mid-Ohio Valley Braces for Weekend Winter Storm
PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – The Mid-Ohio Valley is experiencing a brief respite from the recent frigid temperatures, but residents should prepare for a significant winter storm heading our way this weekend. A front passing through this afternoon will bring showers, potentially mixed with early snow, before transitioning to rain as temperatures climb into the low 40s.
Today’s Forecast: A Temporary Break
Showers will clear out late this evening, giving us a couple of quiet days on Thursday and Friday. However, all eyes are now on a developing winter storm poised to impact the region starting Saturday night and continuing into Sunday.
Key Points About the Approaching Winter Storm (as of Wednesday morning):
- Timing: Snow is expected to begin moving in Saturday night and persist through Sunday.
- Impacts: The primary threats are accumulating snowfall and dangerously cold temperatures extending into the beginning of next week. Travel will be severely impacted, particularly in southern areas.
- Uncertainty Remains: While still several days out, forecast models are increasingly aligning, suggesting the potential for moderate to heavy snowfall across the Mid-Ohio Valley.
Frigid Temperatures on the Horizon
Beyond the snow, prepare for a significant drop in temperatures. Overnight lows from Friday night through Tuesday morning could plummet below 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Wind chill values could make it feel even colder, potentially dropping below 0 degrees Fahrenheit. These conditions pose a serious risk of frostbite and hypothermia. For more information on staying safe in extreme cold, visit the National Weather Service.
While the temperature forecast is subject to change as we approach the weekend, the increasing certainty of moderate to severe winter weather impacts warrants preparation. Just as we did earlier this week, it’s crucial to prepare for another wave of arctic air to impact the Mid-Ohio Valley.
