Global Backlash After Itamar Ben Gvir’s Controversial Treatment of Aid Activists
A diplomatic storm is brewing as Canada, Italy, and France have formally denounced the “unacceptable” treatment of pro-Palestinian activists intercepted by Israeli naval forces. At the center of the controversy is Itamar Ben Gvir, Israel’s far-right National Security Minister, whose recent actions have drawn condemnation not only from the international community but from within the Israeli government itself.
The Incident: Intercepting the Global Sumud Flotilla
The tension began when the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), comprising over 50 boats from more than 40 countries, set sail from Turkey. The mission’s goal was to deliver essential aid—including baby formula, food, and medical supplies—to the besieged population of Gaza, highlighting the dire humanitarian conditions in the region.
However, the mission was cut short. Israeli naval commandos intercepted the fleet in international waters west of Cyprus. While Israel dismissed the effort as a “PR stunt at the service of Hamas,” organizers of the GSF accused the Israeli forces of “illegal, high-seas aggression,” reporting the use of water cannons and intentional ramming of vessels.
The Ben Gvir Video That Ignited Fury
The situation escalated from a maritime interception to a diplomatic crisis when Itamar Ben Gvir posted a provocative video on social media. Captioned “Welcome to Israel,” the footage shows the Minister visiting a detention facility at Ashdod port.

- Humiliation: The video depicts Ben Gvir walking past a female activist being pushed down by security personnel.
- Power Play: He is seen waving a large Israeli flag next to activists kneeling on the ground with their hands tied behind their backs.
- Controversial Quote: In Hebrew, Ben Gvir is heard telling the detainees: “Welcome to Israel. We are the masters.”
International Response: Canada and European Allies Speak Out
The reaction from global leaders was swift and severe. Canada’s Foreign Minister, Anita Anand, described the footage as “deeply troubling,” emphasizing that the humane treatment of civilians is a matter of absolute urgency.
Similarly, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the treatment “intolerable” and a violation of human dignity, demanding an official apology. France’s Foreign Minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, expressed “indignation,” insisting that all nationals involved be treated with respect and released immediately.
Internal Friction: Netanyahu and Saar Rebuke Ben Gvir
In a rare move, Itamar Ben Gvir found himself isolated within his own cabinet. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Ben Gvir’s conduct was “not in line with Israel’s values and norms,” subsequently ordering the deportation of the activists.
Foreign Minister Gideon Saar went further, accusing Ben Gvir of “knowingly causing harm” to the state through a “disgraceful display.” Despite the criticism, Ben Gvir remained defiant, claiming that Israel has “stopped being a pushover.”
The Humanitarian Reality in Gaza
While the Israeli foreign ministry claims that Gaza is “flooded with aid,” reports from the United Nations suggest a far bleaker reality. Many displaced families remain in overcrowded tents with limited access to clean water and impaired waste management systems, leading to significant public health concerns.
The conflict, triggered by the October 7 attacks, continues to result in devastating casualties and a systemic collapse of basic infrastructure, making the delivery of humanitarian aid a critical and highly contested issue on the world stage.
