Drama at the Brickyard: Alexander Rossi and Top Drivers Clash in High-Stakes Practice

The road to the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500 is never without its share of adrenaline and danger. During a rain-shortened practice session at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the atmosphere shifted from competitive speed to sudden chaos when a frightening three-car incident unfolded in Turn 2.

The Turn 2 Incident: Alexander Rossi at the Center

The session, which was cut short due to rain and lightning, took a dramatic turn 28 minutes in. Alexander Rossi, driving the No. 20 Java House Chevrolet for Ed Carpenter Racing, lost control and spun in Turn 2, making heavy contact with the SAFER Barrier. The situation quickly escalated when Pato O’Ward, attempting to avoid Rossi, spun under braking and suffered a secondary high-impact collision with Rossi’s car.

Adding to the carnage, Romain Grosjean was also swept into the chaos, spinning into the barrier while trying to navigate around the wreckage. Both Rossi and O’Ward’s vehicles sustained significant damage.

Is Alexander Rossi okay?
According to Dr. Julia Vaizer, the INDYCAR medical director, Rossi—who had impressively qualified second on Sunday—was awake, alert, and in good spirits. However, as a precaution, he was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. Both O’Ward and Grosjean were released from the scene without injury.

Speed and Resilience: Newgarden Leads the Pack

Despite the crash, the session provided critical data for the drivers. Josef Newgarden, a two-time Indy 500 winner, managed to bounce back from a disappointing qualifying session to clock the fastest lap of the day at 226.198 mph in his No. 2 Shell Fuel Rewards Team Penske Chevrolet.

Other notable performances from the shortened session include:

    n

  • Takuma Sato: 225.723 mph (No. 75 Amada Honda)
  • Dennis Hauger: 224.554 mph (No. 19 Only Bulls Honda)
  • Ryan Hunter-Reay: 224.415 mph (No. 31 Prize Picks Arrow McLaren Chevrolet)
  • Marcus Ericsson: 224.376 mph (No. 28 Phoenix Investors Honda)

What’s Next for the 110th Indy 500?

The intensity is only ramping up as the field prepares for the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” With only 35 minutes of actual track action due to weather and the Turn 2 incident, the drivers are eager to fine-tune their setups.

Fans should keep an eye on Miller Lite Carb Day, the final practice before the main event, taking place this Friday. The main event, the 110th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, is scheduled for Sunday, May 24.
