A Historic Appointment for Northwestern University
Northwestern University has officially entered a new chapter. The Board of Trustees announced that Mung Chiang will serve as the university’s 18th president, officially taking the helm on July 1. This appointment marks a significant milestone for the institution, as Chiang becomes the first Asian American president in Northwestern’s history.
Chiang succeeds former President Michael Schill, who resigned in September 2025. Until the official transition in July, Interim President Henry Bienen—a seasoned leader who previously led the university from 1995 to 2009—will continue to guide the institution.
A Proven Track Record of Academic and Strategic Leadership
Mung Chiang does not come to Northwestern as a stranger to high-level academic administration. Since January 2023, he has served as the president of Purdue University, another powerhouse within the Big Ten research network. His tenure at Purdue was characterized by a bold commitment to technology and national security.
Some of his most notable achievements include:
- AI Infrastructure: Securing a staggering $3.9 billion in investments to build a cutting-edge artificial intelligence memory chip packaging facility.
- Policy Influence: Playing a pivotal role in the design and implementation of the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, a landmark piece of federal legislation.
- Diplomatic Advisory: Serving as the first engineer to hold the position of science and technology adviser to the U.S. Secretary of State in 2020.
Academic Pedigree and Vision
Chiang’s intellectual foundation is rooted in excellence. A graduate of Stanford University, he holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and mathematics, as well as a master’s and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering. Before his time at Purdue, he spent 14 years at Princeton University, where he rose to become one of the youngest chair professors in the institution’s history.
“I have long admired Northwestern for its dedication to interdisciplinary scholarship, artistic creation and impactful research, its tremendous healthcare system, and its palpable school spirit,” Mung Chiang stated upon his appointment.
Looking Ahead: Priorities and Challenges
Chiang steps into the presidency during a complex period. Northwestern has recently navigated intense federal scrutiny and negotiated deals with the Trump administration to restore critical research funding. This backdrop makes Chiang’s experience in government relations and strategic initiatives more valuable than ever.
His immediate priority is clear: community engagement. Chiang has pledged to listen to the stakeholders across all levels of the university, including:
- Collaborating with the 12 distinct colleges and schools.
- Supporting the 21 varsity sports teams.
- Visiting Northwestern Medicine hospitals to strengthen healthcare integration.
- Embracing and preserving cherished campus traditions.
With a blend of technical brilliance and administrative mastery, Mung Chiang is poised to elevate Northwestern’s standing as a global leader in interdisciplinary innovation and research excellence.
