Chris Paul to Inspire Future Leaders: NBA Star Receives Honorary Degree from Morehouse College

In a powerful celebration of leadership, character, and community impact, Morehouse College has announced that NBA icon Chris Paul will serve as the keynote speaker for the 142nd Commencement exercises. The event, scheduled for Sunday, May 17, 2026, promises to be a landmark moment for the Class of 2026 and the entire Morehouse community.

Beyond his role as the keynote orator, the 12-time NBA All-Star, two-time Olympian, and renowned philanthropist will be awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters. This prestigious honor recognizes Paul’s unwavering commitment to societal improvement and his influence both on and off the basketball court.

Beyond the Game: The Vision of Chris Paul

Chris Paul is widely recognized not only for his elite skills in the NBA but also for his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to philanthropy. For Paul, this recognition from Morehouse College is more than just an award; it is a testament to the values of stewardship and ethical leadership.

“I have a deep respect for Morehouse’s legacy and impact on our community, especially on generations of young Black men… greatness is not defined solely by performance, but by character, consistency, and commitment to one’s community.”Chris Paul

By sharing his journey, Paul aims to encourage the graduates to carry these core principles into the next chapter of their lives, emphasizing that true success is measured by how one serves others.

A Trio of Excellence: Honoring Stewardship and Service

Chris Paul will not be the only individual recognized during this ceremony. Morehouse College will also confer honorary degrees upon two other exemplary leaders whose lives reflect a profound legacy of public service:

  • Chris Womack: The Chairman, President, and CEO of Southern Company. As one of the few African American Fortune 500 CEOs, Womack has championed a $50 million HBCU initiative, providing critical scholarships and technology access to students across six states.
  • Rev. Dr. Lawrence Edward Carter Sr.: The retiring founding dean of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel. Having served the college since 1979, Dean Carter has turned the chapel into a global hub for spiritual reflection, hosting luminaries such as Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.

Celebrating the Morehouse Legacy

The commencement is the culmination of a week-long celebration including alumni reunions. The event will highlight the achievements of distinguished alumni such as U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock and Grammy-winning producer DJ Khalil, further illustrating the diverse and global impact of a Morehouse education.

Additionally, the Baccalaureate service will be led by Reverend Dr. Winford “Kenny” Rice Jr., a distinguished alumnus and scholar whose work bridges the gap between religious communities and political institutions.
