Detroit Tigers Schedule: Walk-Off Win Completes Royals Sweep and Extends Winning Streak

Detroit – The Detroit Tigers are heating up! In a game reminiscent of their resilient spirit, outfielder Riley Greene described the team as embodying a bit of the “Gritty Tigs.” And gritty they were, as they rallied past the Kansas City Royals 10-9 on a Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park.

Greene’s clutch two-run double tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, setting the stage for Colt Keith’s game-winning RBI single. This walk-off victory secured a sweep of the Royals and the home stand, extending the Tigers’ winning streak to an impressive six games. It’s their first sweep of a home stand of six games or more since July 2021.

From 4-9 to Over .500

Just a week ago, the Tigers stood at 4-9. Now, they’ve climbed back to .500 with a 10-9 record, fueled by three nail-biting one-run victories against the Royals. The team demonstrated remarkable perseverance, overcoming a 6-1 lead and enduring four delays – two lengthy rain delays and two due to umpire illness.

“A crazy game to say the least,” said Tigers manager AJ Hinch. “You’ve gotta play all nine (innings) and see what happens, even when you get put in a little bit of disarray. It’s important to keep playing.”

Keith’s Heroics and a Celebratory Jersey Removal

The win marked the Tigers’ first walk-off since last September, and it was Colt Keith who delivered the magic. Celebrating his first walk-off hit in the majors, Keith was swarmed by teammates who, in the heat of the moment, playfully removed his jersey.

“It’s a great feeling,” Keith said, sporting a new Tigers hoodie. “Obviously, to walk-off any game is a great feeling. This is amazing for me to be able to do that in a big-league stadium.”

A Ninth-Inning Rally

Trailing 9-7 in the bottom of the ninth against Royals closer Lucas Erceg, the Tigers mounted a comeback. Gleyber Torres led off with a single, followed by a walk from Kevin McGonigle after successfully challenging a call. Despite a strikeout and a sharp lineout, Riley Greene stepped up and delivered the game-tying double.

Rising Stars Shine

McGonigle and Keith are quickly becoming key contributors, hitting .309 and .317 respectively. These homegrown talents, both having signed long-term contracts, are leading the charge for the Tigers.

Early Lead and a Fight Back

The Tigers initially took the lead with an RBI double by Spencer Torkelson in the second inning and extended it in the fourth with an RBI single by Vierling. However, the Royals battled back, tying the game and eventually taking an 8-6 lead with a three-run home run by Salvador Perez.

Weather Delays and a Resilient Response

The game was punctuated by significant weather delays, totaling nearly two hours. Despite the disruptions, the Tigers remained focused and responded with a run in the seventh inning, thanks to a triple by McGonigle and a sacrifice fly by Kerry Carpenter. The Royals added another run in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Tigers’ determined rally.

Looking Ahead: Detroit Tigers Schedule

The Tigers will carry their momentum into a four-game series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Stay updated on the Detroit Tigers schedule for game times and details. As Greene put it, “We’re gonna take it into Boston, you know, ride the momentum and keep going.”
