Ryan Seacrest Calls Out Contestant: Wheel of Fortune Bonus Round Sparks Fan Outrage
Wheel of Fortune fans are expressing their frustration after a recent Bonus Round puzzle left a contestant empty-handed and viewers questioning the fairness of the game. The controversy centers around a seemingly obscure phrase that many believe was too difficult, even for seasoned players.
The Game and the Lead-Up
Jim Spallina, a contestant from Chicago, Illinois, returned for his second game on April 9th, having already won $13,800 the previous day. The show’s format allows previous winners to continue competing throughout April. The episode saw a competitive match between Spallina, Tucker Dunn from Alhambra, California, and Ally Metcalf from Memphis, Texas (originally from London and raised in Dubai).
Dunn initially took an early lead, solving multiple toss-up puzzles, including “Listening To My Walkman” for $9,500. However, Metcalf quickly caught up, winning a trip to Puerto Rico with the puzzle “Print Out Your Itinerary,” bringing her total to $15,200. Spallina also had his moments, eventually solving a Triple Toss-up and finishing the day with $7,700, bringing his two-day total to $21,500. Dunn left the game with $10,000.
The Controversial Bonus Round
Metcalf advanced to the Bonus Round, choosing “People” as her category and bringing her husband, Ryan, along for support. She was given the standard starting letters: “R, S, T, L, N, and E.” Adding “M, D, P, and A” to the mix, the puzzle began to reveal “_ _ _MM_ _ _DD_ES.”
As the clock ticked down, Metcalf struggled to decipher the phrase. She guessed “Paddles,” but it was incorrect. Host Ryan Seacrest acknowledged the difficulty, stating, “It’s a tricky one.” The correct answer was revealed to be “Chummy Buddies.” Metcalf missed out on winning a Ford vehicle.
Fan Backlash and Seacrest’s Reaction
The Bonus Round immediately sparked outrage among Wheel of Fortune viewers. Many took to social media, particularly Reddit, to express their disbelief at the puzzle’s obscurity. Comments ranged from calling the puzzle “bogus” and “old-timey” to questioning whether anyone actually uses the phrase “Chummy Buddies” in everyday conversation.
One Reddit user exclaimed, “That bonus puzzle, wtf man?” Another replied, “Seriously!! Chummy buddies?! Who would ever think of that?” Fans also pointed out Seacrest’s own reaction, noting that even he seemed to acknowledge the puzzle’s difficulty. “Even Ryan was like yeah I mean no one was getting that one lol,” one fan observed.
The incident highlights the ongoing debate about the fairness and accessibility of Wheel of Fortune puzzles. While the show aims to challenge contestants, many viewers believe that some puzzles are simply too obscure or outdated to be solvable within the time constraints.
