China Issues Travel Warning for US-Bound Citizens Following Seattle Airport Incident
SEATTLE, WA – China has cautioned its citizens to exercise increased vigilance when traveling to the United States through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SeaTac). This advisory follows reports of a group of Chinese academics being denied entry into the US, sparking concerns about potential heightened scrutiny.
Details of the Incident Remain Unclear
While specifics surrounding the incident are still emerging, Chinese officials announced the warning on Thursday via X (formerly Twitter). According to a statement released by China’s consular affairs office, 20 Chinese scholars, all possessing valid US visas, were subjected to what they described as “unreasonable questioning” before being refused entry. The statement further alleges a pattern of “malicious inspections and harassment” targeting Chinese academics at SeaTac.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding these allegations. The South China Morning Post reported that the group was en route to attend a conference when they were stopped by US border officials.
Concerns Over US-China Relations
The timing of this incident has raised eyebrows, particularly given the current state of US-China relations. Former Washington Governor Gary Locke, who also served as the US Ambassador to China, expressed his bewilderment. “This really is very puzzling,” Locke stated. “It makes no sense and does not set a good tone for upcoming meetings between President Trump and President Xi Jinping.”
Potential Broader Implications
Experts suggest that a continuation of such incidents could have far-reaching consequences. David Bachman, a specialist in US-China relations, noted the potential impact on future travel, including major international events. “We have the World Cup coming up, and there will be Chinese visitors who want to attend games here and in other parts of the country,” Bachman explained. “If they’re discouraged from coming, this could have an economic impact, as well as implications for US-China relations.”
The Port of Seattle has clarified that it does not oversee federal inspection processes, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection responsible for these operations. As of now, CBP has not released additional details regarding the alleged incident involving the 20 Chinese scholars.
Travelers Urged to Prepare
Chinese officials are advising travelers to thoroughly familiarize themselves with US entry regulations and to anticipate the possibility of increased scrutiny during the immigration process. This advisory underscores the growing concerns surrounding travel between the two nations and the potential for further diplomatic friction.
