Chris Paul’s Subtle Celebration: Clippers’ Play-In Loss Sparks Meme Response
The Los Angeles Clippers’ season has come to an end, and one former player seems to be taking particular satisfaction in their defeat. Chris Paul, the veteran point guard who recently retired after a tumultuous split with the franchise, responded to the team’s 126-121 loss to the Golden State Warriors in the play-in tournament with a telling meme on his Instagram story.
The image, a widely recognized internet template, carried the caption, “I stopped by one of my biggest haters funeral today just to make sure that … was dead.” Paul’s message was clear, and the internet quickly picked up on the pointed jab. This isn’t a sign of healing wounds, but rather a continuation of a very public and acrimonious separation.
A Rocky Departure
To understand the context, rewind to this season. Paul signed with the Clippers for what was intended to be a final NBA run. However, tensions quickly arose with team leadership, reportedly stemming from disagreements about his role and presence in the locker room. This led to his effective exile from the organization, a trade to the Toronto Raptors, and ultimately, his retirement rather than joining a championship contender. Despite being the Clippers’ all-time assists leader and a pivotal figure in franchise history, Paul hasn’t shied away from voicing his displeasure since retiring, notably on Carmelo Anthony’s podcast.
Clippers’ Collapse and Future Concerns
As awkward as Paul’s exit was, the Clippers’ performance on Wednesday was arguably more embarrassing. Despite holding a significant lead for the majority of the game against a Warriors team recently bolstered by Stephen Curry’s return, they repeatedly failed to capitalize, ultimately succumbing to a late-game surge led by Curry and other veteran Warriors players. Leading for 85% of the game at home, only to lose, is a tough pill to swallow.

It gets even worse, though, as the Clippers won’t even get to enjoy a lottery pick. They owe their unprotected 2026 first-rounder to the Oklahoma City Thunder due to the Paul George trade, which could now land in the top four. They do have the Indiana Pacers’ pick thanks to the Ivica Zubac trade, but that only goes to them if it lands between Nos. 5-9. Oh, and the team is also still awaiting the results of the NBA’s investigation into their Leonard-Aspiration scandal, which could come with significant repercussions if the league finds they circumvented the salary cap. pic.twitter.com/SXpuNIYdHr
The situation is further complicated by the Clippers’ draft outlook. They owe their 2026 first-round pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder, a consequence of the Paul George trade, and that pick could potentially land in the top four. While they possess the Indiana Pacers’ pick (obtained in the Ivica Zubac trade), it only conveys if it falls between the 5th and 9th positions. Adding to the team’s woes, they are also awaiting the outcome of the NBA’s investigation into alleged salary cap circumvention related to the Kawhi Leonard situation, which could result in significant penalties.
Chris Paul’s departure was just one chapter in a series of dysfunctions for the Clippers. However, it may be indicative of a larger, more challenging 2026 for the franchise. The combination of on-court struggles, draft limitations, and potential league sanctions paints a bleak picture for the Clippers’ future.
