(WNEM) – Central Michigan University (CMU) is taking steps to improve its communication strategies following a wave of concerning posts on social media that surfaced Sunday afternoon. While initial investigations, as reported by TV5 on Monday, indicated no immediate danger, the incident prompted a swift response from university officials.

Student Banned from Campus, Potential Arrest

In a letter addressed to students and staff on Tuesday, CMU President Neil MacKinnon revealed that the individual responsible for the alarming comments was a student. This student has been banned from campus grounds, and faces potential arrest should they attempt to return. President MacKinnon confirmed that law enforcement officials have been in contact with the student, reiterating that there is currently no threat to the CMU community.

Investigation Referred to Prosecutor’s Office

The investigation has been handed over to the Isabella County Prosecutor’s Office for a thorough review. This ensures a comprehensive assessment of the situation and potential legal ramifications.

Acknowledging Student Fears and Communication Breakdown

President MacKinnon acknowledged the distress caused by the social media posts, stating, “We also want to acknowledge that the statements made on social media felt threatening to students, faculty and staff – and that the lack of information from CMU led to confusion and fear.” He admitted that the university’s initial response was inadequate and contributed to the anxiety felt by the campus community. “Those fears and concerns are understandable, and we should have addressed them more appropriately.”

Revising Communication Protocols

CMU is actively revising its communication protocols to address situations involving perceived threats or concerning behavior that doesn’t necessarily constitute an immediate danger. Currently, the university has established procedures for handling direct threats and emergency situations, but lacked a clear process for communicating about less definitive, yet still alarming, scenarios.
