Joey Wiemer’s Return to Milwaukee: A Story of Collisions, Records, and Resilience
MILWAUKEE – Nationals outfielder Joey Wiemer made a return trip to American Family Field this weekend, bringing with him a compelling story of a dramatic play and a record-breaking start to the season. Brewers fans undoubtedly remember the unforgettable collision with Sal Frelick at Yankee Stadium in September 2023.
The play itself was a highlight reel moment. Wiemer and Frelick collided while chasing a fly ball in right-center field, with Frelick making an incredible catch that preserved a no-hit bid for a remarkable ten innings. While the Brewers ultimately lost the no-hitter in the 11th and the game in the 13th, Frelick’s catch remains a vivid memory for fans.
The Mark of the Collision
Wiemer didn’t return empty-handed. He proudly displayed a scar on his left elbow, a souvenir from the collision. He explained that the injury was caused by impact with the outfield scoreboard. Adding to the story, Wiemer also took an elbow to the chin from Frelick during the play. “I definitely got the worst of that one,” Wiemer admitted with a smile.
A Journey Through Teams and a Historic Start
This visit marks Wiemer’s fourth team since being traded from the Brewers to the Reds in the Frankie Montas deal in July 2024. Interestingly, Wiemer indirectly contributed to the Brewers’ success earlier this season. He became just the second player in the Live Ball Era (since 1920) to reach base in his first 10 plate appearances of a season, joining Carlos Delgado (2002) in this rare feat.
How did this benefit Milwaukee? The Nationals’ opening series was against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Wiemer went a remarkable 6-for-6 with two home runs in a pair of Washington victories, effectively helping the Brewers by taking points off a division rival.
Looking Ahead
Joey Wiemer’s journey through Major League Baseball continues to be one filled with memorable moments, resilience, and a knack for making an impact.
