Susan Ballabina Selected as Lone Finalist for Texas A&M University Presidency

BRYAN, Texas – The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents has announced Susan Ballabina as the sole finalist to become the next President of Texas A&M University. This pivotal decision comes after a comprehensive search following the departure of former President Mark Welsh III.

A Confident Choice for the Future

Board Chairman Robert L. Albritton expressed the Board’s strong confidence in Dr. Ballabina’s ability to lead the university. “On behalf of the Board, we are confident Dr. Susan Ballabina is the right leader for Texas A&M University,” Albritton stated. “She brings unparalleled knowledge of Texas A&M, a collaborative leadership style, and the experience and know-how to guide the university with vision and purpose. Equally importantly, she cares deeply about the people and communities this university serves.”

A Six-Month Search Culminates

The announcement follows a special meeting held by the Board on Monday afternoon, marking a significant step forward after over six months of searching. The search began after Welsh resigned on September 19, 2025, amidst controversy surrounding a viral video and a classroom discussion on gender identity. Regents dedicated more than five hours on April 7th to reviewing candidates in a closed session.

Dr. Ballabina’s Extensive Experience

Currently serving as Executive Vice Chancellor of the Texas A&M University System, Susan Ballabina oversees system-wide operations and drives key strategic initiatives. She works closely with the Board of Regents, university presidents, and agency leadership across the state. Her career within the A&M System is marked by significant leadership roles, including Chief of Staff to the President, Senior Vice President for Academic and Strategic Collaborations, and Deputy Vice Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer for Texas A&M AgriLife.

Chancellor Glenn Hegar highlighted Dr. Ballabina’s qualifications: “Dr. Susan Ballabina is a proven leader who understands this institution, the people it serves, and the responsibility it carries for the State of Texas.” He emphasized the importance of strong leadership as Texas A&M celebrates its 150th anniversary, focusing on results, accountability, and continued success.

Transparency and Recusal

Notably, Dr. Ballabina was initially a member of the presidential search committee. However, she formally recused herself before applying for the position, ensuring a fair and impartial evaluation process. She played no role in assessing other candidates.

Educational Background and Recognition

Dr. Ballabina’s academic credentials include a bachelor’s degree from Tarleton State University, a master’s degree from Stephen F. Austin State University, and a doctorate in public affairs from The University of Texas at Dallas. She has received numerous accolades, including being named a Regents Fellow by the A&M System, a four-time recipient of the Superior Service Award from AgriLife Extension, and a Distinguished Alumna of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Tarleton State University.

Transition and Gratitude

Dr. James Hallmark briefly served as acting president, followed by former state Senator Tommy Williams, who was appointed interim president in October 2025. Chancellor Hegar expressed gratitude for Williams’s leadership, stating, “The A&M System is grateful to Tommy Williams for his steady leadership and service to Texas A&M during this important time.”
