Artur Akhtyamov: Maple Leafs Goaltender Set for Historic NHL Debut

Artur Akhtyamov to Make First NHL Start with Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto Maple Leafs fans are buzzing with anticipation as goaltender Artur Akhtyamov is set to make his highly anticipated NHL debut on Thursday against the New York Islanders. Head coach Craig Berube confirmed the news on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in the young netminder’s career.

A Journey to the NHL

Akhtyamov, 24, was originally drafted by the Maple Leafs in the sixth round (106th overall) in 2020. He’s diligently worked his way through the ranks, honing his skills with the American Hockey League’s Toronto Marlies. This season, he’s posted a strong 20-12-4 record with the Marlies, boasting a 2.90 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage. He previously made his NHL debut in relief, making five saves in a 6-3 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on December 13th.

Coach Berube’s Confidence in Akhtyamov

Coach Berube expressed his confidence in Akhtyamov, stating, “I really liked him right from camp. He backed up a couple times this year & just has a great personality.” Berube further highlighted Akhtyamov’s competitive spirit and impressive reflexes, adding, “He’s played well down there. He’s a competitor and he’s really got fast reflexes. He’s competitive as hell, man. I like the kid a lot.”

Forced Opportunity Due to Injury

Akhtyamov’s opportunity arises due to an injury sustained by goaltender Anthony Stolarz during Tuesday’s 4-0 loss to the Washington Capitals. Stolarz was injured early in the first period while attempting a save and was unable to put weight on his left leg. Joseph Woll finished the game, allowing three goals on 17 shots. Woll’s recent workload has been a concern, having only played back-to-back games once this season.

Roster Moves Alongside Akhtyamov’s Debut

In addition to Akhtyamov’s debut, forward Luke Haymes will also be making his NHL debut against the Islanders. Haymes, an undrafted free agent signed on March 25th, has impressed with 17 goals and 32 points in 64 games with the Marlies. To make room for Haymes, forward Bo Groulx will be sent down to the AHL. Groulx has appeared in 13 games with the Maple Leafs this season, recording three goals and five points.

Akhtyamov’s Contract and Future

The Maple Leafs have demonstrated their belief in Akhtyamov’s potential by signing him to a three-year, $2.7 million contract extension on March 16th, with an annual average salary of $900,000. This commitment underscores the organization’s long-term vision for the young goaltender.

This is a pivotal moment for Artur Akhtyamov, and Maple Leafs fans will be eagerly watching to see how he performs in his first NHL start. You can find more information about the Maple Leafs at NHL.com.
