JP Estrella Heads to Michigan After Three Seasons with Tennessee
In a significant move for college basketball, J.P. Estrella has announced his transfer to the University of Michigan following three seasons with the Tennessee Volunteers. The news, first reported by Volquest on Thursday, marks a new chapter for the promising forward.
Estrella’s Impact at Tennessee
During his time in Knoxville, Estrella established himself as a key contributor for the Volunteers. Last season, he averaged an impressive 10.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. His efficiency on the court was notable, boasting a 59.6% field goal percentage. Furthermore, Estrella ranked among the nation’s elite in offensive rebounding, securing the eighth-best offensive rebound percentage nationally.
The 6-foot-11 forward entered the transfer portal on April 6th, concluding his redshirt sophomore season with Tennessee, which ended with a heartbreaking loss to Michigan in the Elite Eight. Reflecting on his decision, Estrella shared on Instagram: “After a lot of thought and conversations with my family, I have made the difficult decision to enter the transfer portal. My time as a Vol over the past three years has meant more to me than I can put into words, and I will always cherish the memories and relationships I’ve built here. Thank you to my coaches, teammates and Vol Nation for the constant love, support and belief in me. While this decision wasn’t easy, I’m excited and hopeful for what the next chapter holds.”
Injury Challenges and Early Career
Estrella’s journey at Tennessee wasn’t without its challenges. He faced a significant setback in the 2024-25 season, missing all but three games due to season-ending surgery on his left foot in November. Prior to this, he battled an ankle injury during the preseason. He also experienced knee and foot issues during the season.
Despite these hurdles, Estrella demonstrated flashes of brilliance. In the limited action he saw in the 2024-25 season, he averaged 4.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 10.3 minutes per game. As a freshman in the 2023-24 season, he appeared in 25 games, averaging 5.0 minutes and contributing 1.6 points and 0.8 rebounds.
Recruiting Profile and Potential
Estrella arrived at Tennessee as a highly-touted four-star prospect, ranked No. 59 overall in the Rivals Industry Rating for the 2023 class. He was considered the No. 8 center in the nation and the top overall prospect from New Hampshire, having honed his skills at Brewster Academy.
What This Means for Michigan
Michigan gains a skilled and versatile forward with significant potential. Estrella’s size, shooting ability, and rebounding prowess will be valuable assets for the Wolverines. His experience in a competitive conference like the SEC should also translate well to the Big Ten. You can find more information about Michigan Basketball at Michigan Athletics.
This transfer is a major win for Coach Juwan Howard and the Michigan program, adding a key piece to their roster as they look to contend in the Big Ten.
