Bahamas Arrest: Husband Detained in Wife’s Disappearance at Sea

The arrest of Brian Hooker, an American man, has intensified scrutiny surrounding the disappearance of his wife, Lynette Hooker, in the Bahamas. The couple was reportedly enjoying a sailing trip when Lynette went missing in rough waters, and the subsequent investigation has taken a dramatic turn.

Details of the Arrest

Brian Hooker was taken into custody by the Royal Bahamas Police Force on Wednesday, confirmed by his lawyer to CNN. Assistant Commissioner Advardo Dames stated the arrest was made for “additional questioning based on some probable cause.” While currently held as a suspect, no formal charges have been announced.

Mr. Hooker, through his attorney Terrel Butler, “categorically and unequivocally denies any wrongdoing” in connection with his wife’s disappearance, and has been fully cooperating with authorities.

The Couple’s Sailing Life and the Incident

Brian and Lynette Hooker, both US nationals, have spent over a decade sailing together, sharing their adventures on social media. According to Brian Hooker’s initial account, Lynette fell from their 8-foot dinghy near Elbow Cay in the Abaco Islands on Saturday evening while returning to their yacht, “Soulmate.”

He reported that strong currents carried Lynette away, and he lost sight of her. He stated she was wearing the engine safety lanyard, causing the dinghy to lose power, and he attempted to paddle to shore. He claims he last saw her swimming towards the shore, as reported by Richard Cook, fire team lead with Hope Town Volunteer Fire and Rescue.

Search Efforts and Shift to Recovery

The dinghy eventually drifted to Marsh Harbour, where Brian Hooker sought help from local police. Hope Town Volunteer Fire and Rescue conducted an extensive six-hour search, but were unable to locate Lynette.

Initially describing the incident as a boating mishap, Brian Hooker stated, “I am heartbroken over the recent boat accident in unpredictable seas and high winds that caused my beloved Lynette to fall from our small dinghy… Despite desperate attempts to reach her, the winds and currents drove us further apart.”

However, the search has now transitioned from a rescue operation to a recovery mission after days of unsuccessful efforts. The US Coast Guard has also launched a criminal investigation into Lynette Hooker’s disappearance.

Family Concerns and Questions

Lynette Hooker was not wearing a flotation device when she went overboard. Her daughter, Karli Aylesworth, expressed concerns about the lack of information provided and called for a thorough investigation. She questioned why her mother was swimming away from the boat and why she had the keys at the time of the incident.

Aylesworth also revealed past relationship issues between her parents, adding to the complexity of the situation. Lynette’s mother, Darlene Hamlett, echoed the family’s shock and desire for answers, stating, “We have many unanswered questions.”

Ongoing Investigations and Travel Advisory

The US Coast Guard Detroit sector has interviewed Aylesworth as part of its investigation. The US State Department is aware of the situation and is working with Bahamian authorities to provide assistance. Travelers are advised to exercise increased caution in the Bahamas, as boating regulations are not well enforced, and incidents of injuries and deaths have occurred.
