Anthony Davis Reflects on Past Trades and Future Aspirations

Anthony Davis, the 10-time All-Star, recently appeared on “The Draymond Green Show,” offering a candid look into his career and the events that have shaped his journey. The interview, released on Wednesday, sparked significant discussion, particularly regarding his experiences with the Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans Pelicans.

The Lakers Trade: A Lack of Communication

Davis expressed disappointment over the way the Los Angeles Lakers handled his trade to the Dallas Mavericks. He felt a lack of respect and communication from the organization, stating, “I just couldn’t fathom it, I couldn’t understand it. And nobody told me nothing. Nobody said a thing to me.” He admitted understanding the business side of the decision but lamented the absence of a simple phone call or text message to inform him of the move. This lack of courtesy still stings, even years later.

Pelicans’ Disrespect: The Final Straw

The situation with the New Orleans Pelicans proved even more disheartening for Davis. He revealed that the team’s failure to play a tribute video during his return to the Smoothie King Center was “the final straw” in their relationship. He had even left the door open for a potential return later in his career, but the lack of acknowledgment extinguished any possibility. “I left that door open. And when I went back, that first game, and got no trib, I said, ‘Oh, that door is closed.’”

A Complicated History with the Pelicans

While Davis expressed hurt, it’s important to remember the context surrounding his departure. His agent had publicly sought a trade to a contending team, and a deal with the Boston Celtics fell through due to his unwillingness to commit long-term. Furthermore, he was met with boos from Pelicans fans during his final games, suggesting a tribute video might have been met with further negativity.

Surprise and Optimism with the Wizards

Davis admitted to being surprised by his subsequent trade to the Washington Wizards, initially questioning the move. However, he has since been impressed by the team’s facilities, young talent, and overall work ethic. “I was like, ‘Damn, Washington? What?’ But then when you get here, you look at the facility… These mother***ers can play. They play hard.”

Championship Focus and Future Goals

Despite his current team’s struggles, Davis remains focused on competing for championships. At 33, he emphasizes his desire to contend every year. He acknowledges the challenge of transforming a struggling team into a championship contender but remains determined. The NBA is a competitive landscape, and Davis is ready to contribute to a winning culture.

Currently sidelined with a hand injury, Davis has yet to make his Wizards debut. The team, holding the worst record in the NBA, is prioritizing player development and positioning themselves for a high draft pick.
