Quentin Rhymes Enters NCAA Transfer Portal

Quentin Rhymes to Explore Options in Transfer Portal

Nebraska Cornhuskers forward Quentin Rhymes is set to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. This marks the first offseason departure for the program following a successful run to the Sweet Sixteen. The portal officially opens on April 7th and closes on April 21st, providing a 15-day window for players to declare their intent to transfer.

Rhymes, a 6-foot-7 wing, arrived at Lincoln as a promising developmental prospect. He chose Nebraska over offers from New Mexico, Boise State, UNLV, and UC Santa Barbara. Prior to joining the Cornhuskers, he showcased his scoring prowess during his post-grad season in 2023-24, averaging an impressive 22.4 points per game with a 41% shooting percentage from beyond the arc. This demonstrated significant scoring ability and perimeter potential.

Limited Opportunities at Nebraska

Despite his impressive pre-college statistics, Rhymes saw limited action during his freshman season. His only on-court experience came in an exhibition game against Midland, where he played just under seven minutes, recording two points, one rebound, and a block. While a small sample size, it highlighted the challenge of immediately translating potential into playing time at the collegiate level.

Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg remained optimistic about Rhymes’ development, stating last summer, “I’ll say this: Quentin has really improved since we’ve gotten him. He may be as athletic as anybody on our team… He has really bought into the film sessions and is trying to do everything he can to learn the system.” However, the path to consistent minutes remained unclear, ultimately leading to his decision to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Looking Ahead: Potential Landing Spots

Rhymes’ departure follows Nebraska’s Sweet Sixteen loss to Iowa in the NCAA Tournament, a game marred by a late-game miscommunication that briefly left the Cornhuskers with only four players on the court. Iowa capitalized on the error, ultimately ending Nebraska’s tournament run.

Now, Rhymes enters the transfer portal as a player with considerable upside but limited collegiate experience. Programs seeking athletic wings with scoring potential will likely find him an intriguing option. This move provides Rhymes with a chance to reset, find a program where he can secure a larger role, and translate his potential into consistent production.

In the current landscape of college basketball, the transfer portal offers accelerated development timelines. Rhymes is betting that his next destination will provide the opportunity to prove he’s ready to contribute at a high level.
