Mike Matheson Nominated for Bill Masterton Trophy
MONTREAL – The National Hockey League announced on Wednesday that Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson has been selected by the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) as the team’s nominee for the 2025-26 Bill Masterton Trophy. This prestigious award recognizes the player who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.
Matheson has been a consistent force for the Canadiens this season, appearing in 75 games and contributing significantly to the team’s offense with seven goals and 30 assists. His offensive output is complemented by a remarkable commitment to defensive play, showcasing a well-rounded skillset.
Leading the Charge
The 32-year-old defenseman leads the team with an impressive average time on ice (TOI) of 24:13, placing him 18th in the entire NHL. This demonstrates the coaching staff’s immense trust in his abilities and his crucial role in all situations. Furthermore, Matheson has achieved a career-high 34 points at even-strength this season, highlighting his offensive contributions.
But Matheson’s impact extends beyond scoring. He currently leads the NHL in average shorthanded TOI at 3:55 per game and ranks second in total shorthanded time on ice (294:07). This dedication to penalty killing is a testament to his willingness to sacrifice for the team.
A Transformation and a Leader
Originally known for his offensive flair, Matheson has redefined his game this season, becoming a defensive stalwart and a key penalty killer. This transformation is a prime example of the perseverance the Bill Masterton Trophy celebrates. Since arriving in Montreal, and serving as an alternate captain to Nick Suzuki since the 2023-24 season, Matheson has consistently demonstrated strong leadership qualities, inspiring his teammates both on and off the ice.
The Bill Masterton Trophy: A Legacy of Inspiration
The Bill Masterton Trophy has been awarded annually since 1968, honouring the late Bill Masterton, a Minnesota North Stars player who tragically passed away following an on-ice incident in 1968. The award isn’t just about statistics; it’s about the spirit of the game and the dedication of its players.
The Canadiens have a rich history with the Bill Masterton Trophy, with six players previously receiving the honour: Carey Price (2021-22), Max Pacioretty (2011-12), Saku Koivu (2001-02), Serge Savard (1978-79), Henri Richard (1973-74), and Claude Provost (1967-68), the inaugural winner.
The winner of the Bill Masterton Trophy is chosen by a vote of the 32 chapters of the PHWA at the end of the regular season. Matheson’s nomination is a well-deserved recognition of his outstanding season and his embodiment of the qualities the trophy represents.
