Richmond Hill Invests in Enhanced Security with CCTV Expansion
Richmond Hill residents are set to benefit from increased security measures as the city council approved a $100,000 investment towards five additional CCTV cameras, bolstering the existing network operated by York Regional Police (YRP). This decision follows similar initiatives in Vaughan and Stouffville, reflecting a growing regional concern regarding crime rates.
Addressing Community Concerns
The move comes amidst rising anxieties among residents about public safety. Calls to Access Richmond Hill regarding crime have become “more frequent and more urgent,” according to YRP Deputy Chief Paulo Da Silva. Residents are expressing a desire for immediate action to address their concerns and feel more secure in their neighbourhoods.
How the CCTV Network Works
York Regional Police upgraded the CCTV system last year to include real-time stolen vehicle recognition technology. The additional cameras in Richmond Hill will help fill gaps in the network, making it harder for vehicles identified as stolen to evade detection. Currently, the network has captured 76 stolen vehicles, though the limited coverage has sometimes hindered immediate apprehension.
Proven Results and Future Expansion
Data presented by Deputy Chief Da Silva indicates a positive impact from the existing CCTV network. Areas within a one-kilometre radius of camera locations have seen, on average, a 6% decrease in reported crimes during their first year of operation. This improvement rose to 4.1% after the number of cameras doubled. The YRP has already invested $1 million in the 37-camera network and plans to add 18 more cameras this year, with contributions from Richmond Hill, Vaughan, and Stouffville.
Community Support and Considerations
The motion to purchase the five additional cameras received strong support from the community, with 140 residents and households expressing their approval to the city council. While overwhelmingly positive, some skepticism remains. One resident questioned the evidence demonstrating the network’s effectiveness in deterring crime and assisting investigations within Richmond Hill specifically.
A Worthwhile Investment
Despite these concerns, Deputy Chief Da Silva emphasized that the YRP will cover the ongoing operating costs of the cameras. He argued that preventing even a single carjacking, robbery, or break-in justifies the investment. The expansion represents a proactive step towards creating a safer environment for all Richmond Hill residents.
