PROVIDENCE, RI – The Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) is set to make history in May 2026 by awarding its first-ever honorary degrees during the commencement ceremony. This landmark decision recognizes individuals whose contributions significantly align with CCRI’s mission of education, service, and community betterment.

Honoring a Legacy of Justice: Judge Frank Caprio

The late Judge Frank Caprio, renowned for his decades of compassionate service on the bench, will receive a posthumous Honorary Associate in Arts degree. Judge Caprio, who passed away last year after nearly 40 years of dedicated service, became a global icon for his empathy and fair-minded approach to justice. His commitment to opportunity and education resonated deeply within the Rhode Island community and beyond. Celebrating Journalistic Excellence: Dan Barry

Joining Judge Caprio in receiving this prestigious honor is Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author, Dan Barry. Barry will also be awarded an Honorary Associate in Arts degree in recognition of his exceptional work in journalism and the art of storytelling. His career began at the Providence Journal, where he contributed to the paper’s 1994 Pulitzer Prize win, and has flourished over the past 30+ years with the New York Times. Barry to Deliver Commencement Address

In addition to receiving the honorary degree, Dan Barry will deliver the commencement address to the graduating Class of 2026. The selection of Barry and Caprio was made by CCRI’s Honorary Degree Committee, highlighting the significance of their contributions.
