Tom Fitzgerald Leaves New Jersey Devils After Significant Impact

NEWARK, NJ – April 6, 2026 – In a surprising announcement, New Jersey Devils Managing Partner David Blitzer revealed today that Tom Fitzgerald will be leaving the organization. Fitzgerald’s journey with the Devils began as interim General Manager on January 12, 2020, before earning a full-time promotion to Executive Vice President/General Manager on July 9, 2020. He most recently served as President, Hockey Operations/General Manager since January 23, 2024.

“Tom and I had a thoughtful conversation today and agreed it was time to move in a new direction,” Blitzer stated. “Tom fundamentally changed the trajectory of our team, leading us to a franchise record for points in a season and establishing New Jersey as a premier hockey destination. He’s a highly respected leader within the Devils organization and throughout the NHL, and I deeply value our friendship. I extend my best wishes to Tom and his family.”

A Critical Offseason for the Devils

Blitzer acknowledged the fans’ frustrations, stating, “As we prepare to move forward, it is important I acknowledge our fans. I recognize we have not delivered in the way you expect and deserve and I understand and share in your frustration. This is a critical offseason for our franchise, and we will explore all avenues that best position the Devils to compete for a Stanley Cup once again.”

Fitzgerald echoed this sentiment, saying, “After talking with David Blitzer, it became clear that moving on was the best course of action for the benefit of the team. I am incredibly grateful to David, Josh Harris, and the entire New Jersey Devils organization for the opportunity to be a part of their journey for the past decade.”

Fitzgerald’s Legacy and Future Outlook

Fitzgerald highlighted the team’s strengths, adding, “The Devils are fortunate to have a core of talented players, a passionate fanbase, and, most importantly, dedicated people who worked alongside me towards a common goal. I’ve always believed New Jersey is a hidden gem, and I’m proud of the effort we put in to elevate the standard and make it a destination. I look forward to the next chapter in my hockey career and will always cherish my time with the Devils.”

Fitzgerald’s departure marks a significant turning point for the Devils. His leadership was instrumental in building a competitive team and fostering a positive environment. The organization now faces the challenge of finding a successor who can continue to build upon the foundation he established.
