Ohio Schools Recognized as Science of Reading Champions

COLUMBUS – State Representative Gayle Manning (R-Avon) has announced that seven elementary schools in Lorain County have been honored as 2026 Science of Reading Champions by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. This prestigious award recognizes the schools’ dedication to implementing evidence-based reading instruction and improving student literacy outcomes.

What is the Science of Reading?

The Science of Reading isn’t a single program, but a vast body of research encompassing decades of study on how children learn to read. It emphasizes a systematic and explicit approach, focusing on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Unlike older methods, it prioritizes understanding *how* the brain learns to decode words, rather than relying solely on memorization or guessing.
