Brent Burns Achieves Historic NHL Milestone: 1,000 Consecutive Games
DALLAS – Colorado Avalanche defenseman Brent Burns etched his name into NHL history on Saturday, becoming just the second player ever to appear in 1,000 consecutive regular-season games. The Avalanche faced off against the Dallas Stars in a Central Division showdown, and the arena buzzed with anticipation as Burns approached this remarkable feat.
The 41-year-old veteran, instantly recognizable by his iconic beard, received a warm ovation from both Stars and Avalanche fans early in the game. A significant contingent of Avs supporters joined Dallas fans in celebrating Burns’ incredible dedication and durability.
The Iron Man Legacy
While Burns’ achievement is monumental, the all-time ironman streak belongs to forward Phil Kessel, who remarkably played in 1,064 consecutive regular-season games spanning from November 3, 2009, to April 13, 2023. Kessel’s impressive run included stints with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins, Arizona Coyotes, and Vegas Golden Knights.
Burns’ streak began on November 21, 2013, while playing for the San Jose Sharks. He’s maintained an unbroken presence in the lineup through trades to the Minnesota Wild and Carolina Hurricanes, and now with the Avalanche. This consistency is a testament to his exceptional physical conditioning and commitment to the game.
A Career of Excellence
This game marked Burns’ 1,572nd career regular-season game, a testament to his longevity. He reached another milestone in October, appearing in his 1,500th career game against the Stars. Currently, Burns boasts an impressive career total of 941 points, comprised of 272 goals and 669 assists.
Burns is having a productive first season with the Avalanche, already contributing 11 goals. He and Hall of Famer Nicklas Lidstrom are the only defensemen in NHL history to score double-digit goals at age 40 or older, showcasing his continued offensive prowess.
Sharks Legacy
Burns spent 11 seasons with the San Jose Sharks, becoming a beloved figure in the Bay Area. His dedication and leadership were instrumental to the Sharks’ success during that period. His journey through the league has been marked by consistent performance and unwavering commitment.
