Cloud Sponges: A Rare Underwater Discovery in British Columbia
A British Columbia diver has made an extraordinary discovery, bringing renewed attention to a species once believed extinct: ancient cloud sponges. Ryan Swan, from Be Sea Adventure, captured stunning video footage of these delicate creatures in the depths of Saanich Inlet.
A Glimpse into a Lost World
“It was really cool, like visually to see the sponges in their habitat, the way they are at Christmas Point was fascinating,” Swan shared. The Saanich Inlet dive site is one of the very few locations globally where these ancient cloud sponges can still be observed. However, reaching them requires significant expertise and dedication.
“I had to take on technical dive training, which is an advanced type of scuba diving,” Swan explained. “So that helps you go beyond the limits of what recreational diving allows.” This specialized training, involving advanced equipment and different gas mixtures, allows divers to extend their bottom time and explore deeper, more challenging environments.
The Importance of Cloud Sponges
Swan documented his dive and shared the remarkable footage on his YouTube channel, Be Sea Adventures. His goal is to showcase the beauty and importance of underwater ecosystems.
Cloud sponges, a type of glass sponge, are incredibly fragile and vulnerable to damage from anchors and prawn traps. Despite their delicate nature, they play a crucial role in maintaining the ocean’s health. They act as natural filters, removing nutrients and contributing to the overall balance of the marine environment. As an indicator species, their presence signifies a healthy ecosystem and good water quality.
Protecting a Precious Ecosystem
Swan is committed to continuing his dives and sharing his findings. “If I can inspire people to get into scuba diving or inspire scientists or people to make better protection efforts, even if it’s just one person, then I think we’re making a difference with Be Sea Adventures,” he stated. His work highlights the need for increased awareness and conservation efforts to protect these unique and vital marine habitats.
The discovery serves as a powerful reminder of the hidden wonders that lie beneath the waves and the importance of responsible exploration and conservation. Further research into cloud sponge populations and their role in the ecosystem is crucial for ensuring their survival.
