Clark Gilbert: A Life Dedicated to Testimony and Service

The recent callings of Elder Gérald Caussé and Elder Clark G. Gilbert to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles mark a significant moment for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While their paths to this sacred responsibility have differed – Elder Caussé originating from France and serving as the Church’s presiding bishop, and Elder Gilbert hailing from California and leading Church education – both have arrived at the same profound conclusions: Jesus Christ lives, He guides His Church through living prophets, and their new assignments are only possible with divine assistance.

From California Roots to Apostolic Calling

Elder Clark G. Gilbert, born in Oakland, California, and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, was ordained on February 12, 2026, following the passing of President Jeffrey R. Holland. His journey is a testament to the Lord’s ability to magnify the efforts of those who dedicate themselves to His work. He has consistently demonstrated a willingness to answer the call, whether as a missionary learning Japanese in the Japan Kobe Mission, as the 16th president of BYU–Idaho, or as the first president of BYU–Pathway Worldwide. Throughout these assignments, and now as a General Authority Seventy, Elder Gilbert and his wife, Sister Christine Gilbert, have maintained a steadfast faith that the Lord would “make up the difference.”

A Testimony Rooted in Doctrine and Covenants

Shortly after receiving his calling, Elder Gilbert reflected on Doctrine and Covenants 107:23, which charges Apostles to be “special witnesses of the name of Christ in all the world.” He recognized that his primary responsibility, and the responsibility of all Apostles, is to bear witness of Jesus Christ throughout the world. He shared a powerful experience of hearing the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles bear witness of Christ, not just with words, but with a palpable spiritual witness that strengthened his own conviction.

The Power of Partnership with the Lord

Elder Gilbert’s experience as a young missionary in Japan exemplifies his approach to life. Initially struggling with the language, he realized that the Lord had called him to serve there, and therefore, would empower him to succeed. He dedicated himself to diligent study, and the Lord magnified his efforts. This principle – trusting in the Lord’s support – has been a constant throughout his life and career.

A Family Foundation of Faith

The support of his family has been instrumental in Elder Gilbert’s journey. Sister Christine Gilbert’s unwavering willingness to follow the Lord’s direction, regardless of location or circumstance, has been a source of strength. Their eight children have also embraced this calling with enthusiasm and support. This familial unity is grounded in the covenants they made in the temple, a testament to their enduring commitment to the gospel.

Learning from Prophetic Leadership

Elder Gilbert has had the privilege of working closely with President Dallin H. Oaks and the late President Russell M. Nelson. He admires President Oaks’ courage, intellectual depth, and insightful questions, and he was deeply moved by President Nelson’s forward-looking optimism and unwavering faith, even during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic. He observed how President Oaks, as Prophet, teaches not based on preparation but on revelation, demonstrating the power of the prophetic mantle.

A Lifelong Mission to Testify of Christ

As Elder Gilbert prepares to serve as an Apostle, he expresses a profound gratitude for the opportunity to testify of Jesus Christ. He affirms that through the Savior, we can overcome death, receive forgiveness, and find succor in times of need. He declares with conviction: “He is the Savior of the world. And I know that is true.” Together with Elder Caussé, he embraces a lifelong mission to share the love of the Savior and invite all to come unto Christ.
