Padres vs. Red Sox: A Home Opener Without the Usual Flyover
As the Boston Red Sox kick off their season at Fenway Park against the San Diego Padres, fans will notice a missing element from the traditional home opener festivities: the customary military flyover. The Red Sox have confirmed to WBZ-TV that pregame ceremonies will proceed without this aerial salute.
Last year, the skies above Fenway were graced by a spectacular display featuring two F-35s from the Vermont Air National Guard’s 134th Fighter Squadron, the “Green Mountain Boys,” alongside a KC-46 from the New Hampshire Air National Guard’s 157th Air Refueling Wing. This year, however, the scene will be different.
The Reason Behind the Cancellation
The absence of the flyover is linked to ongoing military commitments. Senior Master Sgt. Michael Davis of the Vermont Air National Guard explained to WBZ-TV that “due to ongoing mission operations and commitments, our unit was unfortunately unable to provide support for this event today.” The New Hampshire Air National Guard has been contacted for further comment.
According to U.S. Air Force spokesperson Jennifer Bentley, the Air Force had approved support for the April 3rd game. However, “it appears the team was unable to find a unit to volunteer.” Bentley clarified that all flyovers are conducted on a volunteer basis at the unit level, with event organizers directly contacting units to assess their availability.
“There have been no policy changes regarding flyovers,” Bentley stated. “Support is fully based on aircraft mission requirements and availability at the individual unit level.” This suggests the decision wasn’t a policy shift, but rather a logistical challenge related to current operational demands.
Military Presence Remains
Despite the absence of the flyover, a military presence will still be felt at Fenway Park. The presentation of colors will be performed by members of the Vermont Army National Guard, alongside representatives from the Massachusetts Army and Air Force National Guard based at Hanscom Air Force Base.
While the aerial display won’t take place, the Red Sox and their fans will still honor the service of the men and women in uniform during the home opener.
