Auburn Tigers Advance to NIT Championship After Dominating Illinois State

INDIANAPOLIS – The Auburn Tigers showcased their strength and determination, defeating the Illinois State Redbirds 88-66 in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) semifinals on Thursday night. While the NCAA Tournament’s Final Four is underway, Auburn is making a compelling case for their postseason prowess.

A Tale of Two Teams

Despite not making the NCAA Tournament, Auburn (21-16) proved they were a force to be reckoned with, dominating Illinois State (23-13) from the start. The Tigers, a bubble team left out of March Madness, played with a level of intensity and precision that left no doubt about their superiority.

First-Half Dominance

Auburn’s aggressive defense forced 11 first-half turnovers from Illinois State, building a 13-point lead at halftime. This early pressure set the tone for the remainder of the game. The Tigers capitalized on these errors, scoring 26 points off turnovers throughout the night.

Key Performances

Keyshawn Hall led all scorers with an impressive 24 points for Auburn. For Illinois State, freshman Ty’Reek Coleman stood out with 17 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Auburn’s relentless attack.

Looking Ahead: NIT Championship Game

Auburn will now face Tulsa in the NIT title game on Sunday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Tulsa secured their spot after a 74-69 victory over New Mexico in the first semifinal. This will be Auburn’s first appearance in the NIT championship game.

Illinois State’s Promising Season

Despite the loss, Illinois State Coach Ryan Pedon remains optimistic about the program’s future. “It’s great for our guys to be able to see what it looks like when you do get to that stage,” Pedon said. He believes the experience gained in the NIT will be invaluable as they continue to build a competitive program. The Redbirds finished the season with a 23-13 record, marking consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time since 2008-09 and 2009-10.

The Evolving NIT Landscape

With the emergence of new postseason tournaments like the College Basketball Crown, fewer power conference teams are participating in the NIT. However, Auburn’s success demonstrates that the NIT remains a valuable opportunity for teams to extend their season and gain valuable experience. As Steven Pearl, Auburn’s coach, noted, the team has embraced the challenge and is playing with a “level of joy.”
