Iran Confirmed to Participate in the 2026 World Cup Despite Ongoing Conflicts

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has affirmed that Iran will participate in the 2026 World Cup, scheduled to be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This confirmation comes amidst ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, particularly concerning the US-Israel war with Iran, which had cast a shadow over the nation’s participation.

Earlier this month, the Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) indicated they were in discussions with FIFA regarding potentially relocating Iran’s matches from the US to Mexico. However, Infantino, following a visit to watch Iran’s 5-0 friendly victory against Costa Rica in Turkey, stated unequivocally, “Iran will be at the World Cup. We’re delighted because they’re a very, very strong team, I’m very happy. The matches will be played where they are supposed to be, according to the draw.”

Match Schedule Remains Unchanged

Iran is slated to face New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles on June 15th and 21st, respectively, and Egypt in Seattle on June 26th. The tournament kicks off on June 11th, promising a thrilling spectacle for football fans worldwide.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum had offered Mexico as an alternative host for Iran’s matches, but Infantino’s visit and subsequent statements suggest FIFA is committed to maintaining the original schedule. He expressed satisfaction after meeting with the Iranian team and coach, stating, “I’ve seen the team, I’ve spoken to the players and the coach, so everything is fine.”

Political Undertones and FIFA’s Stance

The Iranian team recently displayed a powerful message of solidarity before their friendly match, holding photos of children affected by conflict, as well as images of damaged infrastructure. Mehdi Mohammad Nabi, Vice President of the FFIRI, emphasized their commitment to adhering to FIFA’s regulations, stating, “For us, what matters most are Fifa’s rules and regulations. We will comply with whatever Fifa decides.”

The situation drew commentary from US President Donald Trump, who initially welcomed Iran’s participation but later suggested they should not be involved “for their own life and safety.” Iran responded by suggesting the US should be the one to withdraw from the tournament.

Infantino’s presence at Iran’s match in Turkey, en route from Mexico to Qatar, underscored FIFA’s proactive approach to addressing the concerns. He engaged in “fruitful discussions” with Iranian officials, reaffirming FIFA’s support for the national team. “Given our history in this competition, it is only natural that Fifa should support the Iranian team. Mr Infantino is providing the necessary support to our national team and has given our players a great boost.”

FIFA’s decisive stance signals confidence that the current conflicts will not disrupt the tournament. The confirmation of Iran’s participation is a significant development, ensuring a full and competitive field for the 2026 World Cup.
