San Jose Sharks Face Uncertainty as Ryan Reaves Remains Week-to-Week
The San Jose Sharks are navigating the final stretch of the regular season with a key player’s status in question. Veteran forward Ryan Reaves, a significant presence in the locker room and on the ice, continues to be listed as week-to-week following an upper-body injury sustained during a fight against the Philadelphia Flyers’ Garrett Wilson on March 21st.
Reaves’ Injury and Initial Return
Reaves initially returned to the game for a brief 13-second shift after the altercation, but ultimately remained on the bench for the remainder of the contest. The injury, believed to be to his left hand or finger, has kept him sidelined since. While he was observed at Monday’s morning skate, watching from the bench in a hoodie, a concerning sign emerged: his locker stall has been cleared of all gear and his nameplate removed.
Coach Warsofsky’s Perspective
Head coach Ryan Warsofsky addressed the media regarding Reaves’ potential return, stating, “I would say it is too soon to say.” He emphasized the value of Reaves’ presence, even from the sidelines. “He wanted to come on the bench and be part of it. That’s good. He’s going to be around,” Warsofsky explained. “Another guy who knows what it takes this time of year. He’s been on long playoff runs. He knows what winning looks like, how you have to play the game this time of year, and he’s going to continue to voice that. The more voices we get to help our players understand that, the better we’re going to be in the long run.”
A Veteran Voice and Leadership
Warsofsky has frequently described Reaves as a “5th coach,” highlighting his leadership and experience. The empty locker stall, however, raises questions about the likelihood of his return. Unlike other injured players, such as Ty Dellandrea, whose stall remains intact despite being out since January 6th, Reaves’ space has been completely vacated.
Potential Roster Moves and Future Outlook
With 11 games remaining in the regular season, the Sharks may consider signing a player from the NCAA or calling up a prospect from the San Jose Barracuda to fill potential roster gaps. Reaves’ former locker could be utilized for such a player. While an official ruling on his season is yet to be made, a return appears increasingly unlikely.
The San Jose Sharks face a challenging path forward, and the absence of a veteran presence like Ryan Reaves will undoubtedly be felt both on and off the ice. Fans will be watching closely for updates on his condition and the team’s potential moves as they strive to finish the season strong.
