Shedeur Sanders to Don No. 2 for Cleveland Browns: A Return to Roots

Shedeur Sanders Returns to His Roots with Jersey Number 2

The Cleveland Browns are gearing up for an exciting 2026 season, and a key part of that anticipation revolves around quarterback Shedeur Sanders. After a promising rookie season, Sanders is making a notable change – switching his jersey number from 12 to 2. But this isn’t just a random selection; it’s a deliberate nod to his successful collegiate career.

From Colorado to Cleveland: The Significance of No. 2

Drafted by the Browns in the 2025 NFL Draft (following Dillon Gabriel’s selection), Sanders initially served as a backup. However, he quickly demonstrated his potential, taking the reins down the stretch and showcasing a skillset that has Browns fans optimistic. Now, he’s embracing a number that holds special meaning.

The Browns officially announced the change on social media: “S2. Shedeur Sanders will wear number 2 next season.” This isn’t a new look for Sanders. During his two seasons as a starter at the University of Colorado under his father, Deion Sanders, he proudly wore No. 2.

A History of Success with No. 2

Sanders’s collegiate performance while wearing No. 2 was nothing short of impressive. He holds the FBS/Division 1-A record for career completion percentage at a remarkable 71.8%. In 2024, he threw for 4,134 passing yards and 37 touchdowns with only 10 interceptions in 13 games. While replicating those exact numbers in the NFL will be a challenge, the potential is undeniable.

The availability of No. 2 became possible when DeAndre Carter, who previously wore the number, became a free agent. This allowed Sanders to reclaim the jersey that brought him so much success.

Looking Ahead: Sanders’s Second Season

Entering his second NFL season, Sanders is eager to translate his collegiate achievements to the professional level. He’s competing for the starting quarterback position and hopes that donning his familiar No. 2 will provide a psychological boost and contribute to his continued growth. The Browns are also making other key moves, such as agreeing to deals with Elgton Jenkins and Teven Jenkins, signaling a commitment to building a strong team around their young quarterback.
