MétéoMédia: Winter’s Grip Continues – Ice Rain, Snow, and Hazardous Conditions Forecast for Quebec
Snow, rain, sleet, freezing rain – winter isn’t letting go just yet. Quebec is bracing for another complex weather system that could make Tuesday a difficult day for commuters and travellers. Here’s a detailed look at the forecast from MétéoMédia.
A Mixed Bag of Precipitation
A widespread mix of precipitation is expected across nearly all of Quebec from Monday evening through Wednesday. Some areas could see up to 15 mm of freezing rain, creating treacherous conditions. The constantly changing weather will make for a complicated morning commute, with a more intense second wave of precipitation expected Tuesday evening.
March is ending as it began – with decidedly winter-like conditions. Rain will be the dominant form of precipitation in southern Quebec, but freezing rain is a significant concern, particularly in the Montreal region, which is squarely within the high-risk zone.
Regional Breakdown
- Montreal & Outaouais: A high risk of freezing rain, especially in the Outaouais. Montreal could experience a period of sleet followed by freezing rain during the morning rush hour.
- Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Laurentides, Mauricie, and Capitale-Nationale: Snow will be the primary precipitation type.
- Estrie: Expected to avoid freezing rain and sleet, receiving precipitation primarily as rain, potentially heavy in the evening.
- Capitale-Nationale: Snow may transition to sleet and then freezing rain in the evening.
Timing and Intensity
The weather system will begin to impact Quebec late Monday night. Rain will develop over the Outaouais, Estrie, and the greater Montreal region. Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing before sunrise, increasing the risk of ice accumulation.
The snow will begin falling in the Capitale-Nationale region late at night and reach Val-d’Or early Tuesday morning. Precipitation will continue throughout the day and into the night in Abitibi-Témiscamingue.
Temperatures in the Outaouais and around Montreal are expected to rise above freezing by mid-morning, transitioning precipitation to rain. However, a second, potentially more intense wave of precipitation is forecast for Tuesday evening, bringing the risk of further freezing rain to Montreal and extending to the North Shore, Laurentides, parts of Montérégie, and Beauce.
The Mauricie region could see some sleet Tuesday evening, while snow will continue to fall in Haute-Mauricie, Saguenay, and Abitibi. With temperatures hovering around the freezing point, expect a variety of precipitation types throughout the day.
Travel Advisory
Tuesday is shaping up to be a challenging day for travel. Monitor the temperature closely and be prepared for hazardous road conditions. Stay updated with the latest forecasts from MétéoMédia.
