Marcus Paige Heads to Charlotte: A New Chapter for the UNC Legend
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Former University of North Carolina guard and assistant coach Marcus Paige is embarking on a new coaching adventure. Sources confirm that Paige is leaving the UNC basketball program to join fellow Tar Heel alumnus Wes Miller’s staff at Charlotte. This move marks a significant step in Paige’s burgeoning coaching career, following a successful seven-year professional playing career.
A Tar Heel Through and Through
Paige’s return to Chapel Hill as a coach began ahead of the 2023-24 season, initially serving as the Director of Team and Player Development. He quickly ascended to an assistant coaching role, demonstrating his coaching acumen over the past two seasons. His departure, while not entirely unexpected, was met with a desire from UNC administrators to retain him, according to sources.
However, Paige expressed his deep affection for Carolina while explaining his need for professional growth. He seeks a larger role and diverse experiences to further develop his coaching skills. This ambition ultimately led him to accept a position with the Charlotte 49ers.
From Scoring Star to Mentor
A native of Marion, Iowa, Paige left an indelible mark on the Tar Heel program during his playing days from 2012-2016. He currently ranks 11th in UNC history with 1,844 points and holds the school record for three-pointers made with an impressive 229. His impact extended beyond scoring; he was a leader on and off the court.
Paige’s experience as a freshman, starting 34 of 35 games in the 2012-13 season, proved invaluable in mentoring current players like Derek Dixon. He shared his insights and helped Dixon navigate the challenges of a larger role, emphasizing leadership and confidence.
“I’ve been on him all year about becoming a leader and using his leadership voice,” Paige said in February. “Now that he’s a starter and has taken on a bigger role, that’s become more important, and I’ve seen him do it better.”
Dixon himself acknowledged Paige’s coaching influence, noting the parallels between their freshman seasons and the confidence Paige instilled in him.
Iconic Moments and Lasting Legacy
Paige’s collegiate career was punctuated by unforgettable moments. He earned First-Team All-ACC and Second-Team All-American honors as a sophomore, averaging 17.5 points and 4.2 assists per game. However, he is perhaps best remembered for his clutch double-clutch three-pointer with 4.7 seconds remaining in the 2016 national championship game against Villanova – a shot that remains etched in Final Four history.
His career-high 35-point performance, capped by a game-winning layup with 0.9 seconds left in UNC’s 85-84 overtime victory at NC State in 2014, further solidified his status as a Tar Heel legend. His jersey now hangs proudly in the Smith Center rafters, a testament to his contributions to the program.
