Ryan Strome Trade Rumors: Penguins Missed Opportunity with Ducks Deal?

The Anaheim Ducks and Pittsburgh Penguins are frequent trade partners in the NHL, but a deal almost materialized that would have sent veteran forward Ryan Strome to Pittsburgh. Reports indicate that before the Ducks ultimately traded Strome to the Calgary Flames ahead of the March 6th trade deadline, serious discussions took place with Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas.

A Near Miss for the Penguins

While Strome is known for his positive attitude and appreciation for every day in the NHL, landing with the Flames – a team currently outside of playoff contention – likely wasn’t his preferred outcome. Sources suggest Strome would have relished the opportunity to compete for a Stanley Cup with the Penguins down the stretch of the season and into the playoffs. The Penguins, however, ultimately decided to remain relatively inactive at the deadline, opting to rely on their existing roster and the earlier acquisition of Yegor Chinakhov from the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Strome’s Impact with the Flames

Since joining the Flames, Ryan Strome has made an immediate impact, registering an impressive seven points in just ten games while averaging 16:40 of ice time per game. He’s currently under contract for next season at a $5 million cap hit and is projected to slot in as the Flames’ second-line center for the 2024-25 season.

What Could Have Been?

The Penguins’ decision to stand pat raises questions about whether they missed a valuable opportunity to add a skilled and versatile player like Strome. His ability to contribute offensively and play in multiple roles would have provided a boost to their playoff push. The trade deadline is always a gamble, and sometimes the deals that don’t happen are just as intriguing as the ones that do.
