Devdutt Padikkal: A Journey From School Fields to IPL Stardom

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star batsman, Devdutt Padikkal, recently revisited his roots with a heartwarming impromptu visit to his alma mater, St. Joseph’s Boys High School (SJBHS) in Bengaluru. The visit sparked memories of his three years (2013-2016) spent walking the school corridors and honing his skills on the sports field alongside his childhood friends.

“It was a wonderful surprise!” exclaimed Principal Fr. Norwin Pereira. “We are always delighted to welcome back students of his calibre, especially as he serves as an incredible role model for our younger students.”

A Full Circle Moment

The return to SJBHS was particularly poignant, recalling a moment from 2015 when cricket legend Rahul Dravid inaugurated the school’s indoor sports facility. A then 15-year-old Padikkal, captain of the school cricket team, had the honour of presenting Dravid with a memento. Now, witnessing the 25-year-old excel as the Karnataka Ranji team captain and a key player for RCB feels like a complete circle for everyone involved, including his former history teacher, Gowri Mirlay-Achanta.

“Seeing Devdutt’s excitement, I remember thinking he would one day be receiving something significant himself,” recalls Mirlay-Achanta, fondly remembering a photo of a young Padikkal looking at Dravid with awe. “I’m sure he still cherishes that picture.”

Dedication and Hard Work: A Common Thread

Having mentored numerous breakout cricketers over her 40 years at the school, Mirlay-Achanta notes a consistent quality among them: “These students were incredibly focused and hardworking, especially considering the distractions teenagers often face.”

The Fateful Test

Padikkal’s journey to SJBHS began with a pivotal moment. His high school coach, Mehboob Pasha, recounts the story of a crucial test match that led to Padikkal’s transfer from Army Public School in Class 8. Driven by a desire to provide their son with the best opportunities, Padikkal’s parents persistently requested a chance for him to showcase his talent.

“After a week of requests during practice, we allowed him to play for an hour. He played brilliantly, and it was during that match that the opposing team members mentioned he was the same boy who had scored a half-century against them in a previous inter-school game,” Pasha recalls.

When the time came for his first official match, a shy Padikkal was the only one willing to open the batting. “I asked all the boys who would open, but none volunteered. When I asked this new boy, he softly replied, ‘Yes sir, I will.’ He then went on to score a century!” Pasha shares with a smile.

A Rising Star

Padikkal’s talent quickly became evident. His Class 8 biology teacher, Lisamma Joseph, remembers the excitement surrounding his matches, joking, “We felt we needed to wear helmets to watch those games! With his height, we knew he would hit sixes that would soar over the boundary like no other.”

Padikkal captained his team to victories in the KSCA’s U-14 and U-16 leagues throughout his three years at SJBHS. However, beyond the cricket prodigy, his teachers describe a humble and dedicated young man.

A Quiet Focus

“He had few friends and was completely focused on his studies,” notes Shantha Kumar, Padikkal’s 10th-standard class teacher. Hindi teacher Jennifer Gonsalves adds, “He wasn’t always present due to his rigorous practice schedule, but his discipline in sports translated to all aspects of his life.” Biology teacher Bindu Thomas agrees, “Even students who regularly attended class hadn’t submitted their records, he would have submitted it.”

Despite his dedication to cricket, Padikkal maintained a close circle of friends at SJBHS, relationships he continues to nurture today. Mirlay-Achanta emphasizes the importance of these friendships, stating, “These connections are what keep those who achieve great success grounded.”

Looking Ahead

As the IPL season begins, Padikkal’s teachers are eagerly anticipating his performance. Aruna B, his 8th-standard teacher, echoes the sentiments of many, saying, “Even at that young age, he displayed remarkable passion. We hope he continues to have a bright future.”
