The NBA’s Rising Stars: A Rookie of the Year Race for the Ages
The NBA season is heating up, and the Rookie of the Year race is proving to be one of the most compelling in recent memory. While the spotlight often shines on established stars, two young players – Kon Knueppel and Cooper Flagg – are captivating fans and analysts alike. These former college teammates are now fierce competitors, each making a significant impact on their respective teams.
A Tale of Two Rookies
Last year, Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel shared a suite as teammates at Duke University. This year, they’re battling it out for the coveted Rookie of the Year award. Both are experiencing standout first professional seasons, showcasing skills that have quickly established them as future stars.
Flagg, at just 19 years old, has already broken the NBA scoring record for a teenager twice. He first achieved this feat with 42 points against the Utah Jazz in December, and then surpassed it with an impressive 49-point performance against Knueppel and the Charlotte Hornets. He currently leads the Dallas Mavericks in points, rebounds, and assists, demonstrating his all-around dominance.
Meanwhile, Knueppel has emerged as a prolific three-point shooter, averaging 19 points per game for the resurgent Charlotte Hornets. His shooting prowess has been instrumental in the Hornets’ impressive turnaround, currently tied for the third-best record in the NBA in the 2026 calendar year.
Versatility vs. Efficiency: A Deep Dive
Flagg is a remarkably versatile rookie, capable of playing multiple positions from point guard to power forward. His two-way impact makes him a force on both ends of the court. Knueppel, on the other hand, is an incredibly polished offensive player. His true shooting percentage of 65% ranks fifth among players averaging at least 18 points per game, according to Basketball-Reference.
To gain deeper insights into this exciting race, Christian Clark of The Athletic spoke with Mike Vorkunov, The Athletic’s Business of Basketball reporter and a Hornets enthusiast.
The Hornets’ Turnaround and Knueppel’s Role
Clark: “Before we make our picks, I wanted to ask about Knueppel’s role in the Hornets’ turnaround. Charlotte is 27-12 in the 2026 calendar year, tied for the third-best record in the NBA. How big a factor has Knueppel been during this stretch?”
Vorkunov: “Knueppel has been a huge part of that run. He’s part of the Hornets’ high-powered lineup, outscoring opponents by 27.3 points per 100 possessions. He’s not just a floor-stretcher; he’s an efficient one, and his emerging playmaking skills are a valuable asset. While he isn’t the primary offensive option like Flagg in Dallas, he consistently contributes to winning, a rare feat for a rookie. He’s also avoided the rookie wall, playing in all 39 games, while Flagg missed nine consecutive games with a foot sprain.”
Beyond the Numbers: A Holistic View
Clark: “I think you’ve hit on something important: Knueppel is more than just a shooter. He’s a smart cutter, a solid passer, and contributes on the boards. The Hornets are the second-best rebounding team in the NBA. While over half his shots come from behind the arc, he possesses an old-school game, perhaps honed by playing against grown men at age 14.”
I believe LaMelo Ball is the Hornets’ best player, and Brandon Miller their top scorer. However, Knueppel has the most well-rounded game on the roster. He’s also a capable defender, understanding positioning and making smart plays, like his steal in the win against Dallas on January 29th.
The challenge in choosing a winner lies in comparing players with vastly different roles. Flagg shoulders a heavier offensive burden for the Mavericks, while Knueppel thrives within a more balanced attack. It’s fair to question whether Knueppel’s efficiency would hold up if he were the primary offensive engine.
Vorkunov: “You’re probably right. Knueppel might be less efficient if asked to do more, but I wouldn’t say significantly so. Flagg has a slightly higher usage percentage and averages three more shots per game. However, Knueppel is a better shooter and might create different opportunities for himself. Flagg’s strengths weren’t always his ball-handling and playmaking, which are still developing. He benefited from playing alongside Anthony Davis early in the season, easing his transition to the NBA.”
The Verdict: A Close Call
The debate continues, with compelling arguments for both players. Ultimately, the Rookie of the Year award will recognize the player who has made the most significant impact this season. While advanced analytics favor Knueppel, the raw potential and all-around dominance of Flagg make him a strong contender. The race is close, and the outcome remains uncertain, promising an exciting finish to the NBA season.
