Paul Goldschmidt: A Key Piece in the Yankees’ Offensive Strategy
SAN FRANCISCO – The New York Yankees are committed to providing opportunities for Ben Rice to face left-handed starting pitchers this season. However, the team demonstrated a strategic approach in their recent game against the San Francisco Giants, opting to start veteran Paul Goldschmidt over Rice against Giants lefty Robbie Ray at Oracle Park.
Why Goldschmidt Over Rice? A Lineup Adjustment
This decision sparked some discussion among fans, but manager Aaron Boone explained the reasoning behind the move. Ray represents the Yankees’ only scheduled matchup against a left-handed starter within their first nine games. To avoid a prolonged period without utilizing their right-handed bench players, Boone implemented a full lineup change. This included Paul Goldschmidt for Rice, Amed Rosario for Ryan McMahon, and Randal Grichuk for Trent Grisham.
“Ben’s gonna play against some lefties, Grish too,” Boone stated. “A lot of it has to do with, I think the first three series/nine games, this is probably the only lefty we’re going to see. Certainly want to get those guys in and obviously they bring a lot to the table against left-handed pitching. So, excited to see them get their feet wet today and get going.”
Rice’s Potential and Goldschmidt’s Proven Track Record
The Yankees recognize Ben Rice’s potential against left-handed pitching, as evidenced by his .208 batting average and .752 OPS against lefties last season. However, Paul Goldschmidt brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record. Last season, the veteran hitter posted an impressive .336 average and .981 OPS against left-handed pitchers.
Boone emphasized a strategic approach to Rice’s opportunities, stating, “Are we full roster [having everyone available]? What’s the week look like? Are we seeing a bunch of lefties that week? Have we not seen one in 10 days? Then it’s an ideal day to get Goldy in there. Just the flow of the season and where we’re at goes into it.”
Bolstering the Bench with Right-Handed Power
The Yankees intentionally sought to enhance their bench with right-handed hitters during the offseason, re-signing Paul Goldschmidt and Rosario, and adding Grichuk on a minor league deal. These additions provide crucial balance against left-handed pitching, particularly against formidable opponents like Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet and Orioles ace Trevor Rogers.
“Especially we saw last year, it seemed like [teams] would line up lefties for us when they could,” Boone added. “So having that balance with as left-handed as we are, and then getting the right people into that. Bringing in Rosie, who’s so good against lefties. Adding a Grichuk, who we think can be really tough against them. Just trying to complete your team on the margins where you can.”
The Yankees’ strategic use of Paul Goldschmidt and their bolstered bench demonstrate a proactive approach to maximizing their offensive potential against left-handed pitching throughout the season. You can find more insights on MLB.com.
