Texas Children’s Houston Open: Waring and Woodland Set the Pace
HOUSTON (AP) — The first round of the Texas Children’s Houston Open delivered a captivating display of skill and resilience, with Paul Waring and Gary Woodland emerging as early leaders. Waring carded a stunning 7-under 63, securing a one-stroke advantage over Woodland, both players navigating their own unique challenges to reach the top of the leaderboard.
Overcoming Obstacles: Woodland’s Inspiring Journey
Gary Woodland, the 2019 U.S. Open champion, has been on a remarkable road to recovery. After undergoing brain surgery in September 2023 to remove a lesion, Woodland recently opened up about his struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder in a deeply emotional interview with Golf Channel. He shared that sharing his story was incredibly liberating. “I was crying going into the interview, and I left feeling a thousand pounds lighter,” Woodland revealed after securing a 64 with birdies on his final two holes at Memorial Park.

Waring’s Return to Form
Paul Waring’s journey back to the PGA TOUR has been equally compelling. A strong performance in Abu Dhabi at the end of 2024 earned him a PGA TOUR card through his DP World Tour standing. However, a shoulder injury threatened to derail his momentum, sidelining him for five months. Despite a challenging start to his PGA TOUR career, Waring remained focused on refining his game.
“This week, a lot tidier,” Waring said. “No bogeys and … I’ve just been told I holed over 160 foot of putts today, which is massive and gives you a massive advantage.”
Key Performances and Notable Moments
- Sam Burns, Michael Brennan, and Tom Hoge are tied at 65.
- Marco Penge is among a large group at 66, building on a strong performance at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course last week.
- Brooks Koepka faced a difficult middle stretch, with multiple shots finding the water, resulting in a 75.
The Masters on the Line
With the Masters Tournament approaching, the Texas Children’s Houston Open holds added significance. This is the final week for players to secure a spot in the top 50 of the world rankings and earn an invitation to Augusta. Pierceson Coody, currently at No. 51, will need a strong performance to climb into contention.
For Waring, a victory would be a dream come true, offering a return to the majors after being sidelined last year due to his shoulder injury. “All the work has been around what I did that couple years ago to get myself back in this place that I am now,” Waring explained. “So hopefully, I can build on this today. See how the week goes.”
