GTCR Launches Ascent Sports Group with Strategic LiveBarn Acquisition

Private equity firm GTCR has made a significant move in the youth sports market, forming a new subsidiary, Ascent Sports Group, and simultaneously acquiring LiveBarn, a leading livestreaming provider. This acquisition, reportedly valued at $400 million CAD according to the Globe & Mail, positions Ascent Sports Group to become a major player in the rapidly growing youth sports landscape.

LiveBarn: A Dominant Force in Amateur Hockey Streaming

LiveBarn has established a strong foothold, particularly in amateur hockey across the United States and Canada. The platform provides a crucial service, allowing family, friends, fans, and scouts to access live and on-demand content from approximately 4,000 venues – primarily ice rinks, but increasingly expanding into other youth sports. This accessibility has made LiveBarn a go-to resource for those wanting to follow young athletes’ progress.

Ascent Sports Group: Vision for the Future of Youth Sports

Ascent Sports Group will be led by CEO Gary Swidler, a seasoned executive with a strong background at Match Group. Swidler emphasized the initial focus on strengthening LiveBarn’s hockey offerings. “The priority right now is to be as fulsome of service as we can, as strong a service as we can in hockey,” he stated. The long-term vision, however, extends beyond hockey, with plans to replicate the success in other youth sports categories.

AI-Powered Enhancements to the LiveBarn Platform

A key component of Ascent Sports Group’s strategy is leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance the LiveBarn platform. The roadmap includes integrating AI to deliver deeper analytics, automatic highlight reels, and real-time notifications of key plays. This will significantly improve the viewing experience and provide valuable insights for players, coaches, and scouts. Swidler highlighted the importance of video quality, stating, “The video is critically important, which is why starting with LiveBarn makes a lot of sense.”

Leadership Transition and Continued Innovation

LiveBarn founder Farrel Miller will transition to a board role within Ascent Sports Group. Ray Giroux, formerly LiveBarn’s COO and a former NHL player, will assume the role of CEO for LiveBarn, ensuring continuity and expertise in the hockey market. The executive team will carefully evaluate future upgrades, deciding whether to build new features in-house or acquire them through strategic partnerships.

Addressing Fragmentation in the Youth Sports Tech Market

Swidler’s personal experience as a parent of young athletes fueled his understanding of the challenges within the youth sports tech market. He observed a fragmented landscape, with numerous apps required to follow different sports and even different leagues within the same sport. GTCR’s analysis of the $40 billion CAD youth sports market identified an opportunity to consolidate and improve the experience through technology and strategic acquisitions. This acquisition of LiveBarn is a significant step in that direction.

Investor Confidence and Future Growth

Ares Management remains an investor through its Ares Credit Group, demonstrating confidence in the potential of Ascent Sports Group and LiveBarn. The company is poised for significant growth as it expands its offerings and reaches a wider audience within the youth sports community.
