FIFA Cancelling Hotel Bookings: A Shift in Plans for the 2026 World Cup

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, a significant development is unfolding across North American host cities. Organizers are cancelling thousands of pre-booked hotel rooms in cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Philadelphia, sparking questions about the event’s projected impact and potential benefits. This unexpected move, while not entirely uncommon for large-scale events, is raising eyebrows due to the sheer volume of cancellations.

Significant Cancellations in Vancouver & Toronto

The British Columbia Hotel Association reports that FIFA has cancelled between 70% and 80% of its hotel room bookings in Vancouver, representing approximately 15,000 room nights between June 11th and July 19th. This substantial release of rooms is now available for regular travellers. Similar trends are emerging in Toronto, with hotel associations confirming cancellations of room blocks, though specific numbers are still being tallied.

“In this case, however, the volume released is higher than typically expected. It appears consistent with what is being seen in other host cities across North America,” stated Paul Hawes, president of the British Columbia Hotel Association, in a statement to The Globe and Mail. Sara Anghel, president of the Greater Toronto Hotel Association, echoed this sentiment, noting a pattern of cancellations across the continent. She cautioned, “let that be a lesson … for future host countries or cities.”

Impact Beyond North America

The cancellations aren’t limited to Canada and the United States. Reports from ABC News indicate FIFA also cancelled around 2,000 of its original 10,000 hotel room reservations in Philadelphia. Furthermore, Mexican newspaper El Financiero reported similar cancellations in Mexico City.

Official Response & Tourism Outlook

FIFA organizers have yet to publicly comment on the cancellations. Both the British Columbia and Ontario Tourism Ministries have acknowledged the situation. The B.C. Tourism Ministry expressed excitement about welcoming visitors, stating that the host committee and Hotel Association of Vancouver are “working directly with FIFA” on accommodations. Ontario’s Tourism Ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

Positive Outlook Despite Initial Concerns

Despite the cancellations, both Toronto and Vancouver remain confident in their ability to fill the newly available rooms. June and July represent peak tourist season for both cities, and demand remains high. Ms. Anghel noted that booking demand in Toronto is approximately 30% higher than usual for June. A 2024 Destination Vancouver report indicates the Metro Vancouver area has around 23,000 hotel rooms available.

Lost Revenue for Hotels & Business Events

While the released rooms may benefit leisure travellers, the cancellations have resulted in potential profit losses for hotels. Conference and convention planners have opted for alternative destinations to avoid the disruption caused by the World Cup’s large footprint. Vancouver has also experienced displacement of business events, corporate travel, and tours. However, with an estimated 350,000 incremental visitors expected across the seven matches hosted in Vancouver, the World Cup is still expected to contribute to a busy tourism season.
