Kayode Awosika Joins the Los Angeles Chargers
The Los Angeles Chargers have announced the signing of guard Kayode Awosika, bringing valuable experience and depth to their offensive line. Awosika (pronounced KY-oh-dee ah-woah-SHE-kah) joins the Chargers after four seasons with the Detroit Lions, where he was a key contributor to one of the league’s most productive offenses.
A Five-Year NFL Veteran
Awosika enters the league as a five-year veteran, initially signing as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021. After a season in Philadelphia, he found a home in Detroit, becoming a reliable presence on the Lions’ offensive line. Throughout his career, he’s appeared in 50 regular-season games, including 11 starts, and has also seen action in four postseason contests, making one start.
Proven Track Record in Detroit
During his time with the Lions, Awosika played a crucial role in protecting quarterback Jared Goff and creating running lanes for multiple 1,000-yard rushers. The Detroit offensive line consistently ranked among the league’s best, and Awosika’s contributions were instrumental in their success. He helped pave the way for consistent 4,000+ yard passing seasons for Goff.
College Career at the University at Buffalo
Prior to his NFL career, Awosika excelled at the University at Buffalo. After redshirting in 2017, he became a consistent starter, appearing in 32 of 37 career games for the Bulls. He earned First-Team All-Mid-American Conference honors in 2020, blocking for a rushing attack that ranked second in the nation (287.4 rushing yards per game). He was also a Second-Team All-MAC selection in 2019, when Buffalo set a program record with 3,256 rushing yards. In 2018, as a sophomore, he started 14 games at right tackle, contributing to a school-record 36 touchdown runs.
Chargers’ Offseason Moves
Awosika’s signing is part of a busy offseason for the Los Angeles Chargers, who have also agreed to terms with several other players, including:
- Safety Tony Jefferson

- Linebacker Denzel Perryman
