Stephen Colbert Embarks on a Middle-earth Adventure: Writing a New Lord of the Rings Film

Comedian Stephen Colbert, known for his sharp wit and long-standing passion for J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, is trading the late-night talk show circuit for the fantastical realm of Middle-earth. Following his departure from The Late Show in May, Colbert will be writing a new Lord of the Rings film tentatively titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past. The exciting announcement came from filmmaker Peter Jackson himself, via a surprise video posted on social media on Tuesday.

A Lifelong Tolkien Fan’s Dream Come True

Colbert’s love for Tolkien is well-documented. He’s an avid reader of the books and even made a cameo appearance with his family in Jackson’s 2013 film, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. This isn’t just a job for Colbert; it’s a deeply personal project fueled by years of admiration for Tolkien’s world.

According to Deadline, the screenplay will be a collaborative effort between Colbert, Philippa Boyens (a veteran of the original trilogy), and Peter McGee.

What’s ‘Shadow of the Past’ About?

Set 14 years after Frodo’s departure, The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past will revisit familiar faces – Sam, Merry, and Pippin – as they retrace the initial steps of their epic journey. However, the story will also introduce a new narrative thread, focusing on Sam’s daughter, Elanor, and her discovery of a “long-buried secret” that sheds light on how close the War of the Ring came to being lost before it even began.

Colbert revealed that the inspiration for the film struck him during a re-reading of The Fellowship of the Ring. He was particularly captivated by chapters three to eight, sections that weren’t fully explored in Jackson’s original film adaptation. “I thought, wait, maybe that could be its own story that could fit into the larger story,” Colbert explained to Jackson. “Could we make something that was completely faithful to the books while also being completely faithful to the movies?”

From Late Night to Middle-earth

The timing of this announcement is particularly noteworthy, given the recent and somewhat controversial cancellation of Colbert’s The Late Show. The cancellation sparked debate, with some suggesting political motivations due to Colbert’s criticism of Paramount’s settlement with Donald Trump. Colbert wryly acknowledged the situation, stating, “It turns out I’m going to be free starting this summer,” to which Jackson playfully responded, “Isn’t that fortunate?”

A Growing Tolkien Universe

The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past is just one of several upcoming projects expanding Tolkien’s universe. Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis (the actor who brought Gollum to life), is slated for release on December 17, 2027. This film will focus on Aragorn’s quest to capture Gollum between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. With the original six Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films grossing a combined US$5.9 billion worldwide, the demand for more stories from Middle-earth remains incredibly strong.

This new film promises to be a thrilling addition to the legacy of The Lord of the Rings, blending a beloved comedian’s passion with the masterful storytelling of Tolkien and the cinematic vision of Peter Jackson.
