Unified Fire: A Developing Situation in Valencia County, New Mexico

The Unified Fire, a significant wildfire, is currently burning on both sides of the Rio Grande in Valencia County, New Mexico. Initially concentrated south of Belen and Rio Communities, the fire has demonstrated dynamic behavior, shifting and expanding rapidly. This situation requires constant monitoring and updates, which we will provide here.

Current Status and Containment Efforts

As of Tuesday evening, March 24th, the Unified Fire is actively burning through the Bosque (riparian forest) along the east side of the Rio Grande. A concerning development occurred around 7 p.m. Tuesday when flames jumped across the river, igniting vegetation on the western bank as well. The New Mexico State Forestry Division has now assumed leadership of the wildfire response, bringing additional resources and expertise to the effort.

Evacuations and Road Closures

The safety of residents is the top priority. Evacuation orders are currently in place for the following areas:

  • Rio Grande Stables Road
  • Lagrima Road
  • Madrone Flyway (near Highway 304)

Highway 304 remains closed at Lagrima Road. Residents in affected areas are urged to heed evacuation orders immediately. Falling ash has been reported even in evacuated zones, highlighting the widespread impact of the Unified Fire.

Shelter Information

Evacuation shelters have been established at the following locations:

  • Rio Communities Boulevard (108 Rio Communities Boulevard, Rio Communities)
  • Belen Community Center (305 Eagle Lane, Belen)

Power Outages and Impact

Approximately 265 homes in Valencia County are currently without power due to the Unified Fire. Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) officials have indicated that further evacuations are possible as the fire continues to evolve. Fortunately, as of Tuesday evening, no structures have been lost.

Ongoing Monitoring and Safety
