“The Drama”: Zendaya’s Dark Rom-Com Ignites Debate
Zendaya’s highly anticipated dark romantic comedy, “The Drama,” isn’t set to hit theaters until next week, but it’s already at the center of a heated controversy. A shocking plot twist is drawing criticism from someone deeply connected to a real-life tragedy, sparking a wider conversation about the portrayal of sensitive topics in entertainment.
The Controversial Twist
The A24 film, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, is initially marketed as a lighthearted wedding-themed comedy. However, unsuspecting early viewers are being blindsided by a dark turn: Zendaya’s character confesses to her fiancé (Pattinson) that she once planned a high school shooting but ultimately backed out at the last moment. This revelation has quickly spread, generating significant discussion and, for some, outrage.
A Father’s Painful Reaction
Tom Mauser, whose son Daniel was tragically killed in the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, has publicly expressed his disgust. In a statement to TMZ, Mauser stated he is “disgusted” that the film’s central twist revolves around a planned school shooting. He finds it deeply unsettling that such a horrific event would be incorporated into a romantic comedy, even a dark one.
Mauser, a long-time advocate for gun reform since his son’s death, believes the twist is “awful” and questions the filmmakers’ choice to use this particular scenario to create dramatic tension. He was particularly troubled by Zendaya’s appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, where he felt her reaction to the discussion of the twist was dismissive.
Concerns About Normalization
Mauser fears that portraying such a scenario, even without depicting actual violence, “humanizes” shooters and “normalizes” school shootings. He emphasizes that while he supports individuals who have contemplated violence but ultimately chosen not to act on it seeking help, he objects to the use of this theme for entertainment purposes.
It’s important to note that the film does not depict the shooting itself, and Zendaya’s character does not carry out the planned attack. However, the mere suggestion of such a plot point is proving to be deeply upsetting for some.
