Ricardo Orrego and the Rising Tide of Sexual Harassment Allegations in Colombian Journalism
A powerful wave of testimonies from journalists is gaining momentum on social media following allegations of sexual harassment against two presenters at Noticias Caracol. The network has announced the activation of internal protocols in response. This surge of courage, fueled by the hashtags #YoTeCreoColega (I Believe My Colleague) and #MeTooColombia, demonstrates a growing determination to address a long-silenced issue within the Colombian media landscape.
Caracol Televisión Responds
Juan Roberto Vargas, Director of Noticias Caracol, addressed the situation in a Sunday editorial, stating the network stands with the victims. “This is a painful moment for Caracol, and a sad one for me as director. But it’s also a moment to demonstrate determination, decency, and rigor,” he said. While the names of the accused have not been publicly released by the network, social media is abuzz with accusations.
Journalists Break the Silence
Mónica Rodríguez, a former presenter at Caracol, was among the first to speak out. “It took them targeting someone with power for them to finally be unable to cover it up. The pot has finally been uncovered for her and for all… and may those and other harassers be known. Let them tremble,” she wrote. Rodríguez is now part of an initiative to provide a confidential and secure channel for victims to share their experiences, supported by a legal team to offer guidance on available legal routes. She doesn’t rule out pursuing criminal charges in some cases.
The #YoTeCreoColega movement has also received support from UN Women, Sisma Mujer, and the Casa de la Mujer de Bogotá. Many of the victims are young journalists or interns, often in vulnerable positions, fearing repercussions for speaking out.
Personal Testimonies Emerge
Juanita Gómez, a journalist with Revista Semana and former Noticias Caracol employee, shared her own experience on X (formerly Twitter). She recalled a situation during an international assignment where she had to physically fend off unwanted advances from a senior journalist. Lina Tobón, a sports journalist, recounted an incident in 2022 where a colleague touched her chest and made inappropriate comments.
Reviving Past Allegations
These recent developments have also brought renewed attention to the allegations against Hollman Morris, manager of the Sistema de Medios Públicos RTVC. Accusations of sexual harassment and psychological abuse have surfaced since 2019, with Lina Castillo among those who have filed complaints. A group of journalists has launched the hashtag #NoAlPactoDeSilencio (No to the Pact of Silence), alleging that many complaints against Morris have been dismissed, and the accusers are now facing legal challenges.
Systemic Issues and Government Response
The challenges of bringing sexual harassment cases to justice in Colombia remain significant. The Ministry of Labor has noted that complaints often arise in sectors with clear hierarchical structures, such as the media. The Public Defender, Iris Marín, has also voiced her support for the journalists. The Minister of Labor, Antonio Sanguino, has announced inspections at Noticias Caracol to assess working conditions.
A Safe Space for Reporting
Journalists have created a dedicated email address, yotecreocolega@gmail.com, to receive reports of sexual harassment, abuse of power, and gender-based violence within the Colombian journalistic community. Johana Fuentes, a leader of the initiative, emphasizes that it is a safe and confidential space for sharing testimonies.
The conversation is beginning to shift within newsrooms, fostering a demand for accountability and a safer working environment for all journalists. This movement, sparked by the courage of individuals like those speaking out against Ricardo Orrego and others, represents a crucial step towards a more equitable and respectful media landscape in Colombia.
