Jake LaRavia: The Lakers’ Iron Man and His Pursuit of 82 Games

ORLANDO, Fla. – For Los Angeles Lakers forward Jake LaRavia, the goal of playing all 82 regular-season games isn’t just a dream – it’s a testament to his dedication and resilience. LaRavia was already aware of his progress, recalling to The California Post before the Lakers’ victory over the Heat that he surpassed his previous career high of 66 games played back on March 14th against the Nuggets, marking his 67th game of the season.

This season represents a significant shift for the 24-year-old. After battling injuries in his first three years, LaRavia made a conscious decision to prioritize availability. “I was on pace for whatever it was last season, then I got hurt when I was in Sacramento,” LaRavia explained. “It was kind of like the first three years of my career, kind of just had been riddled with injuries. So, it’s unfortunate. It’s not like I could have controlled any of those things.”

However, LaRavia embraced the mantra, “The best ability is availability.” He focused on what he *could* control, leading to a remarkable transformation. He’s currently on track to achieve his goal, having played in every game of the Lakers’ recent six-game road trip.

Overcoming Past Challenges

Last season, LaRavia played in the first 33 games and 66 of 72 before a broken left thumb sidelined him. This injury, while unfortunate, fueled his determination. He’s taken a proactive approach to his physical conditioning, focusing on strength and injury prevention.

“It’s the most I’ve lifted in my career,” LaRavia shared. “So credit to that for why I’ve been able to not only not get injured but to be able to play through these little knickknack injuries that I might have sat out previously for.” He emphasizes a “maintenance lifting” routine, strengthening his body to withstand the rigors of an 82-game season.

The Value of Availability

Lakers guard Austin Reaves understands the challenge. He himself played 83 games in the 2023-24 season, including the NBA Cup final. “Not a lot of people are able to say that they’ve done it,” Reaves said. “So I was like, ‘Let’s do it.’ I remember the last game we played in New Orleans, after all 83, I was like, ‘Damn, that took a lot.’”

Reaves joins LeBron James, coach JJ Redick, and others who have successfully navigated a full regular season. Redick, who played all 82 games in 2009-10, acknowledges the difficulty. “It’s very challenging,” Redick stated. “It’s always been challenging. It’s very challenging now.” He recognizes LaRavia’s opportunity and his commitment to seizing it.

More Than Just Games Played

While LaRavia’s statistics (8.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.2 steals in 24.7 minutes) may not be eye-popping, his impact extends beyond the box score. His disruptive defense, offensive rebounding, and physicality are invaluable assets for the Lakers. He’s proving to be a reliable contributor, consistently delivering what the team needs.

As the season progresses, Jake LaRavia’s pursuit of 82 games serves as an inspiring example of dedication, perseverance, and the importance of prioritizing availability in the demanding world of professional basketball. He’s currently one of 19 players on pace to achieve this feat, alongside players like Desmond Bane.
